Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to feature the return of previous Spider-Man villains from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's web-slinging projects. Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus, and Jamie Foxx's Electro are some of the big names that will spell trouble for Tom Holland's Peter Parker, but the question remains if Maguire and Garfield will return to help their fellow Marvel hero.
The anticipation surrounding No Way Home has been sky-high ever since the Multiverse was confirmed to be part of its story. This was further amplified by the different rumors and speculation regarding the potential appearance of Maguire and Garfield in the movie.
Although there is already mounting evidence for their MCU return, Sony and Marvel Studios have yet to confirm it, which is understandable. Still, cast members such as Holland managed to hype up the pair's inclusion through subtle teases, while official promotional art of the movie might have already confirmed their involvement.
Now, as the film's premiere inches closer, the lead stars have shared an amusing response that is directly related to the previous Spider-Man movies.
Tom Holland Reacts to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man Make Out Scene
Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon sat down with CinemaBlend to talk about the upcoming MCU threequel.
When asked which scene from previous Spider-Man movies Holland wants to recreate, the Marvel star gave an amusing response by admitting that a reimagining of Tobey Maguire's iconic upside-down kiss in the rain would be his choice. Holland then added a fun twist - instead of Zendaya's MJ, Holland said that he wanted to do it with Jacob Batalon's Ned Leeds.
The full hilarious response can be seen below:
CinemaBlend: "If you guys have the opportunity to go over and act one scene from one of the previous franchises which one would you love to have a chance at acting in?"
Tom: "That’s a great question."
Zendaya: "You already said yours the other day."
Tom: "Did I?"
Zendaya: "I don’t know. Maybe you changed what it is."
Jacob: "I know what it is. That’s messed up. You don’t remember?"
Tom: "Oh! I know what it is. I want to go and do the upside-down making out scene in the rain right now.... Jacob, let’s go. Let’s do it. "
Zendaya: "Harness up Jacob, you two have fun."
Will Holland Recreate It with Zendaya's MJ?
This amusing response from the No Way Home stars essentially cements their strong bond. While Spider-Man: Far From Home gave a glimpse of the trio's friendship, No Way Home is expected to showcase more of their solid behind-the-scenes dynamic.
Previous Spider-Man movies have had a plethora of iconic moments, and Tobey Maguire's iconic upside-down kiss is part of that list. Holland's response is clearly a joke, but this may hint that his Peter Parker could recreate the moment in No Way Home.
In 2002's Spider-Man, Maguire's web-slinger kissed Kirsten Dunst's MJ after saving her from bad guys in the alley. The scene became iconic, as it was Peter's romantic gesture toward Mary Jane, and the added story beat that the latter doesn't know that it is the former that she is kissing makes it even more exciting.
In No Way Home, Zendaya's MJ already knows Peter's web-slinging secret, so recreating the kiss would require another romantic reason. It's possible that the couple would just be fooling around, but many would agree that their reimagining would still pay tribute to the original kiss.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi mentioned in a previous interview that the scene was unpleasant to shoot for Maguire, mainly because he was "semi-drowning" during the moment:
“When he was doing the scene, I remember the water was falling down into his upside-down nostrils, so he was kind of drowning. But it was a kissing scene. So, he had to pretend like it was a pleasant, sweet moment for him, when in fact, he was semi-drowning.”
Given the new technology and direction under Marvel Studios, it's safe to assume that Holland would not experience the "semi-drowning moment" if they managed to include the scene in the threequel. After all, the actor appears to be all-in on recreating the romantic sequence.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to premiere in theaters on December 17, 2021.
