It was already bad when critics could only see Morbius the day before its release. So it was no surprise when it was panned critically while also earning itself a rare C+ from CinemaScore, which resulted in its plummet at the box office. Now, it may be a negative sign for Sony's Madame Web too.

At this point, Sony will be lucky to break even on the Jared Leto-led production, but it certainly puts any sequels to this pseudo-vampire movie in jeopardy. Not to mention the rest of Sony's possible plans, if its baffling post-credit scenes are to be believed.

It makes the news of Sony shifting its film slate incredibly suspicious as if it's in reaction to the poor reception of Morbius. However, this change in Sony's slate finally revealed the release date of Sony’s Madame Web.

According to Sony (via The Ankler's Jeff Sneider), S.J. Clarkson's Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, now has a July 7, 2023 release date.

Along with a release date for Madame Web, Sony also delayed multiple films, such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part I moving to June 2, 2023 from its initial October release date, which means that Part II, set to release in 2023, had to be delayed to March 29, 2024.

It Might Be a Good Time To Change Writers

One would think that after Morbius was critically panned for its shaky script, Sony might reconsider having Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless pen the latest screenplay for Madame Web. A movie that is supposedly meant to be the equivalent of Sony’s Multiverse of Madness.

However, considering that Kraven the Hunter is already filming and still doesn’t have a release date, it’s doubtful that Sony is planning to change course.

Especially since it’s rumored that Sony isn’t even sure what the movie is even about as "the project could turn into something else." Concerning, since production is reportedly set to begin this year to meet the recently announced 2023 date.

Fans will find out whether Sazama and Sharpless will break their terrible streak when they see Madame Web in theaters on July 7, 2023.
