The secret's out about Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion. In addition to this MCU Disney+ series being one of the most anticipated, as its on-set production continues in the U.K., fans are uncovering details about the MCU show. While Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn's Talos roles have been anything but under wraps, it now looks like Secret Invasion's call sheet may include a surprise cameo from an OG Avenger.
To date, the production for Secret Invasion has offered fans glimpses of Emilia Clarke's mysterious character, Skrulls, and Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill back in action. Most recently, photos from the set at Liverpool Street Station in London revealed that Rogers: The Musical will even have a presence in the series.
Now, that same Liverpool set has teased the potential for a surprise appearance, courtesy of War Machine's James "Rhodey" Rhodes, played by actor Don Cheadle.
Don Cheadle's Next MCU Project Potentially Revealed
On Instagram, @the_insta_phils shared new behind-the-scenes images from the Secret Invasion set in Liverpool Street Station in London, U.K., including prop newspapers featuring Don Cheadle's Rhodey on the front page.
In addition to the newspaper headline which reads "President Ritson in London for Emergency Talks," Cheadle's Rhodey is pictured greeting the assumed new President of the United States within the MCU.
In addition to Rhodey being in a suit and tie as opposed to his military uniform, the newspaper also references an "emergency summit" and "unprecedented tensions."
While Cheadle is set to star Armor Wars for Disney+ and potentially make an appearance in Ironheart, his presence in Secret Invasion comes as a bit of a surprise. However, this Disney+ MCU cameo won't be Cheadle's first.
The War Machine star briefly appeared in Marvel Studios' The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for Disney+, which actually earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
War Machine's Potential Secret Invasion Storyline
Even though Don Cheadle's role in Secret Invasion has yet to be confirmed, the fact that he's front and center on a prop newspaper implies that he might make an appearance in the series. The question is just how long and impactful his cameo could be.
While Rhodey's small role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did influence Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, the actor's screen time was short and sweet. Since Secret Invasion looks to involve politics and defense, Rhodey could easily play a larger part considering his military career and penchant for negotiation.
In fact, an update on Rhodey may be needed ahead of Ironheart or Armor Wars, especially in the wake of Tony Stark's death and Rhodey's defiance against Secretary Ross in Avengers: Infinity War.
The fact he's not greeting the President in his military uniform implies that his court-martial still stands; however, he may have found a new role for himself amid the claimed "unprecedented tensions."
While Secret Invasion has yet to receive a confirmed release, Marvel fans are expecting the show to release on Disney+ in late 2022 or early 2023.
