Out of Marvel Studios' many upcoming Disney+ projects, Secret Invasion is arguably shrouded in the most mystery.
Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn's Talos will reprise their roles with Emilia Clarke, Olivia Coleman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir making their MCU debuts.
In a major departure from the comic storyline it's inspired by, Secret Invasion isn't expected to feature any of the Avengers and will instead center around a smaller cast, tapping into the paranoia and espionage elements of the event.
With casting seemingly completed and the series expected to hit Disney+ in 2022, it was only a matter of time until filming got underway; and after a long wait, it seems that day has finally come.
Secret Invasion Begins Filming
Nick Fury actor Samuel L. Jackson took to Instagram to celebrate the start of filming on the Secret Invasion Disney+ series.
The image was accompanied by a brief message from the actor to confirm the beginning of filming in which he shared his excitement to “get back in the groove:"
“Time to get back in the groove. Happy to be back on the attack! #secretinvasion #fuckthatsnap #backwithafury“
Within his post, the legendary actor wore a t-shirt of his Marvel spy being snapped out of existence, inspired by Avengers: Infinity War.
What is Secret Invasion?
Adapted from the comic storyline of the same name, Secret Invasion will see the shape-shifting Skrulls replacing humans as a means of invading humanity. The series will star former SHIELD director Nick Fury and Captain Marvel's Talos alongside newcomers Emilia Clarke, Olivia Coleman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
With the series set to star a much smaller cast than its comic counterpart which involved most of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, it's unclear how similar it will be to its source material. Although, it's entirely possible the Skrull invasion won't begin and end here as the storyline could continue its twists and turns into future projects.
Taking its two leads from 2019's Captain Marvel, Secret Invasion is expected to tie into The Marvels which will release in November 2022. Given filming is only just getting underway on the highly-anticipated series, fans should expect the espionage tale to premiere late next year around the same time the Brie Larson sequel hits theaters.
Secret Invasion will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.
