The vast majority of 2020 has seen just about the entire world sequestered in their homes for weeks at a time, leading to much more time being spent online trying to stay entertained in any way possible. As if these quarantines couldn't get any worse, the entertainment industry went on a six-month pause, forcing film fans to look back on their favorite movie memories from years past.
Google recently unveiled the most searched topics on their web platform through 2020 so far, separating the statistics into categories such as most searched people, recipes, concerts and much more. One of these notable categories was most searched movies, and this year's results include two notable superhero franchises which made the list thanks to widely different circumstances.
According to Google's Year in Search results, the top ten most-searched movies of 2020 globally included both the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Panther and the DCEU's Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. T'Challa and company podiumed at the number three spot, while Margot Robbie's band of baddies snuck in the Top 10 at number eight.
The full list can be seen below:
3.) Black Panther
4.) 365 Dni
7.) Enola Holmes
8.) Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey
10.) Jojo Rabbit
WHAT THIS MEANS
Considering everything that has happened throughout the course of 2020, these two movies don't come as too much of a surprise in the top ten most searched films this year.
Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey was lucky enough to be one of the few major superhero movies to come to theaters on it's scheduled release date of February 7, over a month before worldwide quarantines became the norm. This movie was the eighth feature in the DCEU, and even though it wasn't a huge winner at the box office, Margot Robbie's first solo film in the franchise was a relative hit among critics and fans alike. Birds of Prey earned more positive feedback than most of its predecessors, and it allowed Robbie to further explore her increasingly iconic role.
As for Black Panther, the 2018 release saw a drastic return in popularity across the globe, particularly after the shocking passing of Chadwick Boseman this past August. Fans watched this generational movie over and over again to remember Boseman in his lone solo appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his peers have joined in with tributes to his memory over the past three months. Disney even went so far as to include a Boseman-centric Marvel Studios intro in front of the Disney+ stream for Black Panther on his birthday, similar to the intro created for the late Stan Lee in front of 2019's Captain Marvel.
Fans can only hope that this list adds some new entries in 2021 when movie theaters are hopefully back in swing, bringing the most anticipated new releases from the MCU and DCEU to the world once again.
Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey is currently available to stream on HBO Max, while Black Panther can be found on Disney+.
