Warning - This article contains spoilers from Episode 4 of Loki.
“The Nexus Event” was certainly one of the most shocking episodes of Loki yet with twists and turns from beginning to end. One of the biggest surprises was seeing Agent Mobius pruned from the timeline by Judge Renslayer after discovering the sinister secrets behind the TVA.
Owen Wilson's TVA analyst had grown into a fan-favorite character over the four episodes released so far, so seeing his life fall apart before reaching his ultimate demise was certainly tragic for viewers.
While there is evidence to suggest Mobius is still out there somewhere, the series' fourth installment has left fans of the character shook and wondering what comes next for him.
Based on a recent interview, it seems the fans aren't the only ones who were shocked as Mobius' actor, Owen Wilson, offered his thoughts on the scene.
MOBIUS ACTOR REACTS TO SHOCKING SCENE
In a recent interview with Marvel, Mobius actor Owen Wilson reacted to one of the most shocking moments of Loki's fourth installment as his character was deleted by Judge Renslayer in a surprise betrayal.
The legendary comedy actor first offered his perspective on the relationship between Mobius and Renslayer. Wilson compared the TVA duo's relationship to the bond one would have with “someone in a position of authority,” someone to “sort of try to charm” to be “able to pursue your projects.”
While he thinks that at points she “sort of loses patience” with him, she still “enjoys that he's a little bit of a rascal:”
“The relationship between Mobius and Renslayer, it's the way you might have with your boss. Or when you're back in school with the principal or someone in a position of authority and having to sort of try to charm them, so you're able to pursue your projects. That's the dynamic between Mobius and Renslayer. She sort of loses patience with Mobius and with another one of his schemes. But, I think, she also sort of enjoys that he's a little bit of a rascal.”
However, Wilson explained that after Mobius begins to investigate Renslayer, they reach the “end of that relationship” and “it has become something very different.”
Offering his thoughts on Renslayer's surprise betrayal of Mobius, Wilson called the moment “pretty shocking,” going on to say that it's a running theme through the series that “people aren't quite who they seem to be.”
Additionally, the Mobius actor went on to compare his character's situation to Loki's “when he lands in this bizarre place called the TVA” as he asks if the organization is “worthy of his devotion:”
“The betrayal of Mobius by Renslayer is pretty shocking. And it's a little bit of a hall of mirrors within the whole series, that people aren't quite who they seem to be. In the same way that Loki, when he lands in this bizarre place called the TVA, Mobius will have sort of the same struggles. What is this organization? And is it something that is worthy of his devotion?”
THE DOWNFALL OF MOBIUS AND RENSLAYER
Watching Mobius' entire life as he knows it fall apart within the latest episode of Loki was certainly one of the most heartbreaking moments of the series so far. Wilson's TVA analyst and Judge Renslayer clearly had built a close friendship over their years of working together, so seeing that bond disappear so quickly was quite the demise.
In some ways, it's unfortunate Loki is only a six-episode series as spending more time with Mobius and Renslayer certainly would have made the downfall of that relationship feel much more tragic. Since the time travel adventure has had so much to accomplish in the first four episodes, there have only been a few brief dialogues between the two.
Wilson is clearly right in saying the moment was a shocking one, even if many fans had seen Renslayer's secret villainy coming for some time now. The parallels between Mobius' discovery and Loki's initial arrival at the TVA are apparent as both were left questioning everything they previously believed — in the God of Mischief's case, discovering he had never been truly free at all.
While Mobius has been deleted, for now, the episode's post-credits scene revealed that Loki managed to survive his own deletion, so it's possible that the fan-favorite jet ski fanatic is still out there somewhere. Assuming he does return, fans can potentially look forward to seeing Mobius and Renslayer come face-to-face again one more time.
The first four episodes of Loki are streaming now, exclusively on Disney+.
