Fans were disappointed to see Cate Blanchett's Hela wielding what appeared to be the Necrosword, the weapon of Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher from the comics, in Thor: Ragnarok. It led fans to believe that Gorr wouldn't make any future appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially after his most iconic exchange with Thor was used with Hela instead.
However, the tiniest hope fans had was Hela's minions being changed from Gorr's Black Berserkers in the comics into undead Asgardian warriors. Perhaps Marvel Studios had more plans that involved the vengeful alien and his spawns in the MCU.
Years later, fans were elated thanks to the reveal of Gorr the God Butcher as the villain for Thor: Love and Thunder. On top of that, the newest teaser trailer for the Ragnarok sequel seemingly shows Gorr's enforcers from the comics attacking New Asgard.
Gorr's Minions Attacking New Asgard
In the last few seconds of the teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, not only does it reveal Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor, but also what appear to be the minions of Gorr the God Butcher from the comics, Black Berserkers.
Behind both Jane Foster's Mighty Thor and Chris Hemsworth's Thor, black, reflective creatures with teeth and tentacles can be seen fighting residents of New Asgard.
Upon closer inspection, they even have white jagged teeth, similar to Venom and unlike their completely black and gooey comic counterparts.
In the comics, these creatures are spawned from Gorr's weapon, the Necrosword, which was considered the first symbiote wielded by the god of darkness and creator of symbiotes, Knull.
What Are Black Berserkers?
It's highly doubtful that Gorr's weapon will be connected to symbiotes or Knull due to Marvel Studios not fully owning the rights to the symbiote. Regardless, Gorr's sword will likely have powers identical to those in the comics, which means he can use it to create semi-sentient minions for himself. Even Gorr's Funko POP figure shows him manipulating black tendrils underneath him.
So, it's evident that Gorr's "terrifying weapon" is the Necrosword from the comics. The appearance of black, gooey creatures with tentacles in the teaser matching the Black Berserkers' appearance in the comics is even more evidence of the sword's origin and powers. Considering Thor's armor, it appears to be from the beginning of the movie, so either Gorr is attacking New Asgard himself, or he sends an army of Berserkers in his place.
Fans will find out exactly how Gorr's sword works in the MCU when Thor: Love and Thunder is released in theaters on July 8.
