Long gone are the damsel in distress days.
For years now, female characters have played integral roles in comic book ensembles and have proven to be box office smash successes with their solo outings.
Regardless of their success, there is always concern that our female heroes will play second-fiddle to their male counterparts.

Is there a single person who hasn't praised James Gunn's The Suicide Squad? Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, The Suicide Squad star Alice Braga, who portrays Sol Soria in the movie, applauded her director for bringing so many female characters to the forefront of the ensemble.
"I think it’s so important for us to be represented, for women, the strength of women, for female empowerment."
Braga acknowledged that the film may be "too violent" for younger girls, but she still finds it important that they "see these women in a powerful way, in action sequences and all that.”
Braga also emphasized her enthusiasm to be apart of the DC world, and complimented James Gunn's directorial flavor.
I really love the comics. I really love the DC world. I’m a huge fan of James Gunn. I think he’s a phenomenal director that brings so much joy and so much fun to this.
WHAT THIS MEANS
It feels like there's a new quote praising James Gunn every week. Actors seem to really love working with this guy. Most James Gunn praise are general, "he's so nice and fun!" compliments, so it's refreshing to hear specifics from one of his cast members.
It's no secret that the DCEU is a bit behind Marvel's Cinematic Universe. After all, the MCU had a nearly five-year head start before DC debuted Man of Steel. Since the MCU's inception, they have produced tons of never-before-seen iconic moments, but one thing DC beat them to was a female-led solo flick. Wonder Woman hit theatres nearly two years before the MCU released their first female-led outing in Captain Marvel, and to much critical acclaim and box office success.
However, the DCEU has yet to have its "she's not alone"/A-Force moment. With Braga's quote that the female heroes of The Suicide Squad are very much spotlighted in the movie, fans should expect some epic team-up action sequences with the likes of Braga's Sol Soria, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis's Amanda Waller, and more.
The Suicide Squad is set to hit theatres on August 6, 2021.
