Seeing Tom Holland return as Spider-Man was an exciting part of No Way Home, but the MCU star wasn’t the one fans wanted to see the most. This time around, the returning faces took over the conversation. Alfred Molina put on the steel tentacles once again, Willem Dafoe naturally re-entered as the Goblin, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe met two more Spider-Men: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

Maguire hadn’t put on the spandex for 14 years, and Garfield seven. As much as audiences have loved Tom Holland, fans have never forgotten those that came before, nor should they. Everyone who puts that suit on is part of one of the most important legacies in all of pop culture.

The appearance of the additional Spider-Men was kept a secret by Marvel and Disney, or at least there was an attempt to keep it secret. Often referred to as the worst kept secret in Hollywood, most fans knew that they were likely to make an appearance.

It was up to the actors to keep the gig up, something Andrew Garfield took to heart. Garfield in particular was consistently asked if he would be returning, something he vehemently denied every time.

Well now, all has been revealed, and Garfield has now taken to speaking publicly about what it was like to return to the role of Peter Parker.

After denying that he was returning to his role of Spider-Man for months, Andrew Garfield has finally come out talking about his time on Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In an interview with Variety, the actor notes that "[he is] so grateful" for the opportunity, and that coming back to Peter Parker gave him "a feeling of closure:"

"I am so grateful. I’m just really, really grateful that I got to tie up some loose ends for the Peter that I was playing. I love that character and I’m grateful that I got to work with these incredible actors, this incredible director, and Marvel in conjunction with Sony. It was joyful, and a feeling of closure for me. There was so many unanswered questions for my Peter, where we left it. I got to step back in and get some healing for him. And also really supporting [Holland’s] Peter, and honoring his character completing that trilogy, not distracting or detracting from it."

When Will Garfield Return?

Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker was truly cut short. After the critical and financial failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony’s pivot in another direction left the actor in the dust. So, it’s understandable how cathartic an experience like No Way Home would be for the actor.

Fans have fallen in love with his character all over again. A campaign for an Amazing Spider-Man 3 to be put into production popped up online not too long after the recent MCU film premiered.

Though his return doesn’t need to be relegated to a relaunch of his former franchise. For one, he could become Sony’s Spider-Man in the Venom and Morbius universe. The studio could also launch a live-action Spider-Gwen with Emma Stone and continue their love story in unexpected ways.

When it comes to the MCU, an obvious possibility is an appearance in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Then there’s the rumored Secret Wars project that the Russo Brothers could be involved with, which could present plenty of fun and creative ways for Garfield to show his face again.
