Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to crush at the box office, having only recently been dethroned from the number one spot thanks to Scream. The Tom Holland adventure is the latest MCU adventure, following Peter Parker as he tries to pick up the pieces of a life shattered by Mysterio’s frame job. The film's scale is immense, introducing the Multiverse and bringing back characters such as Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin.
One of the biggest returns, especially if fan reaction has anything to say about it, was Andrew Garfield’s return as Spider-Man. The actor was last seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and had not said much about the role since it was taken away from him shortly after the financial and critical failure of that project.
His involvement was a secret that Garfield tried his best to keep. Despite all the evidence and leaks, the former Marvel star insisted that he wasn’t a part of No Way Home.
It seems that the audience isn't the only one Garfield lied to. In fact, he even hid the truth from his former co-star, Emma Stone.
The Andrew Garfield Secret
Actor Andrew Garfield guest-starred on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he discussed his surprise role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, a secret that he had even kept from his former The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone.
The actor laughed as he confirmed that “[he] kept [the lie] going even with her” and that he “took it seriously:”
"Emma [Stone] kept on texting me, and she was like, 'Are you in this new Spider-Man film?' And I was like, 'I don't know what you're talking about.' She was like, 'Shut up, just tell me,' I'm like, 'I honestly don't know.' I kept it going even with her, it was hilarious... And then she saw it, and she was like, 'You're a jerk'… I didn’t tell anyone, I took it super seriously.”
Garfield’s Stone-Cold Lie
Clearly, Garfield took the role and opportunity seriously; to not even tell a close friend and former co-star is a true commitment. The real question is: did Emma Stone ever truly buy it?
Most fans, despite his consistent denials, had already set their minds on the fact that he was going to be making at least a small appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Either way, the actor’s insistence shows how important the role is to him.
In previous interviews, Garfield made it clear how much he loves the role of Spider-Man. These strong sentiments have led fans to hope the former Peter Parker will continue to want to embody the character for more storylines down the line.
The actor will likely get the chance to do so. There’s always the MCU, or he could always start his Amazing franchise back up. Most likely, however, is how that version of the wall-crawler could become the Spider-Man for Venom’s universe.
Maybe Sony can even adapt a live-action Spider-Gwen film starring Emma Stone. Except for Garfield, he probably won’t find out about her involvement until the day he steps on set—no doubt she will try to get him back somehow.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is playing in theaters worldwide.
