As Marvel Studios turns the calendar and gets ready for its impressive slate of content in 2022, fans are still wondering when the new round of Disney+ shows will actually come to the streaming service. Included in that group is Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk, which will be only the second truly Hulk-centric project after 2008's The Incredible Hulk helped kick off Phase 1.
Although the series has completely finished filming, fans have only gotten a short look at She-Hulk through Marvel Studios' Disney+ Day presentation in November 2021. The 15 seconds of publicly-released footage showed a hint of the show's fourth-wall-breaking methods of comedy, while only giving a short tease of how She-Hulk will look when she's fully transformed.
Part of what makes She-Hulk such a challenge to develop is the fact that Jennifer Walters is in her Hulked-out form almost all the time, meaning there is more CGI work to be done for this series than most of its Disney+ counterparts. Now, as the show inches closer to its streaming debut, one of Maslany's co-stars shared an image of the work that brings the heroine to life behind the scenes.
She-Hulk Photo Shows Mo-Cap Suit
She-Hulk star Ginger Gonzaga, who will be portraying Jennifer Walters' best friend in the Disney+ series, took to her Instagram Story to share an image of series star Tatiana Maslany in her She-Hulk motion-capture suit.
The image shows the top of Maslany's head with dots on her forehead. Above her, attached to a rod coming from her helmet, is a flat green head. This peculiar face is very practical, however, as it allows Maslany's co-stars during filming to talk to and interact with a head that's 7 feet off the ground, exactly where She-Hulk's facial features will be after visual effects are applied.
Included was the following caption:
"And shout out to #jenhulk (as we nicknamed her) this is what Tatiana Maslany has to hold on top of her head when she's Shulkie."
For comparison, this is similar to what Taika Waititi wears when he plays the role of Korg, which he did most recently for 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder. He boasts dots on his face just like Maslany does, but instead of the green head, Waititi's has a replica of Korg's head and face, as shown in the image below:
Prop Heads for She-Hulk Mo-Cap Action
Marvel Studios has mastered the art of motion-capture work over the years, which will continue in a big way with Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk hitting the Disney+ streaming world within the next year. Thankfully, Marvel has plenty of experience with bringing extra-tall and completely CGI-created beings to life the way Jennifer Walters' alter-ego will be in this show.
Through the years, heroes and villains like the Hulk, Josh Brolin's Thanos, and more have had to come to life completely through computer animation, meaning that Marvel had to come up with creative ways to make the characters work on set in real life. Now, the trend continues with Tatiana Maslany and her co-stars as they interact with one another in this new Disney+ adventure.
Maslany won't be the only actor to use this technology on set thanks to Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as Smart Hulk, meaning She-Hulk will have plenty of work to do in the editing and CGI departments now that filming is complete. How it all comes to fruition is still a mystery, but with Marvel's track record, the excitement is building nonetheless.
She-Hulk will premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
