A couple weeks ago, fans of The CW's Batwoman were left disappointed and perhaps a bit shocked when it was announced that series lead, Ruby Rose, would be departing the show starting next season. Batwoman follows Kate Kane (Rose), the cousin of Bruce Wayne, donning the famous Batsuit in the wake of Bruce's prolonged absence from Gotham City. Through teaming up with Luke Fox, head of security for Wayne Enterprises, Kate works to take back her city from the clutches of the villainous Alice and her Wonderland Gang.
The show, which was already renewed for a second season earlier this year , was surely rocked by the departure of its star. However, as the casting search for her replacement continues, a twist has emerged.
NEWS
According to a leaked casting call found on Reddit which has been verified by Decider , the studio is looking to replace Ruby Rose's Kate Kane with an entirely new and separate character, who could potentially go by the name Ryan Wilder. The casting call, which encourages LGBT performers to audition, reads:
"She's likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed," reads the document. "With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today, reformed and sober, Ryan lives in van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk from an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly disciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."
WHAT THIS MEANS
Fans were understandably saddened when it was announced that Rose would no longer play the role. This, of course, resulted in a portion of the show's fanbase expressing their opinion that only she could play the role of Kate Kane. Warner Bros.' apparent solution is to bring in a new character, which seems like a solid compromise.
When the news broke that Rose was leaving, several actors threw their hat into the ring to serve as her replacement, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine 's Stephanie Beatriz and Krypton 's Wallis Day. Whether any of these individuals are cast as this new character remains to be seen.
Batwoman is not returning to the airwaves until next year, but one would expect a casting announcement fairly soon.
