What If...? has been exploring self-contained stories so far, but it seems that a crossover is imminent due to the arrival of an Infinity Stone-infused Ultron in Vision's body.
Marvel Studios' first animated venture introduced many heroes with alternate fates from the main MCU timeline such as T'Challa's Star-Lord, Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, and Doctor Strange Supreme. Throughout the first season, Jeffrey Wright's The Watcher has been a keen observer of these Marvel characters, but it looks like the latest episode cemented the idea that the cosmic being will finally interfere after Ultron's imminent invasion.
Marketing for What If...? initially revealed an image of Vision wielding the Infinity Stones in the show's first batch of posters, but details of the character's storyline have been kept under wraps. However, it was heavily teased in a previous Hyundai promo that this version of Vision would likely serve as the main villain of the series, resulting in a massive multiverse-sized team-up of heroes.
Now, a special look at the MCU villain has been featured in a new poster.
Ultron Takes Over Vision in New Poster
Marvel Studios officially released a brand-new poster for What If...?, showcasing a fresh look at Vision's Ultron body that was unveiled in the show's seventh episode.
At the end of Party Thor's episode, Ultron took everyone by surprise when he arrived alongside a horde of drones and the complete set of Infinity Stones in his chest:
What is Ultron's Motive Now?
This latest poster essentially confirms that the penultimate episode of What If...? will revolve around the origins of this version of Ultron who successfully transferred his consciousness to a Vibranium-infused Vision.; it will show a different take on 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Ultron's arrival at the end of the episode is a major sign that What If...? could finally live up to its earlier tease that the Guardians of the Multiverse will form. The exact details of how this will happen are still unknown, but it's reasonable to assume that Jeffrey Wright's The Watcher will be the one to make it possible.
It will be interesting to find out how these various multiverse heroes will be recruited, and it seems that some individuals like Doctor Strange Supreme will need a lot of convincing before eventually joining the team.
Based on the fact that Ultron managed to obtain the six Infinity Stones, it looks like the evil android's goal is to eradicate not just one universe but instead several ones or even the multiverse as a whole. That said, this could be the reason why The Watcher will leave all his cards on the table and interfere since there will be no multiverse if he decides to just sit back and watch.
All will be revealed when Episode 8 of What If...? premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.
