Marvel Studios Cancels Its 5th Major MCU Movie Amid Disney Cutbacks

For the 5th time in MCU history, Marvel Studios has shelved one of its previously announced major upcoming films for good, meaning fans shouldn't get their hopes up that it will ever go into production. For the most part, Marvel Studios makes good on its promises to fans regarding film and TV releases. The studio produces multiple projects every year across movies and television, and in the grand scheme of things, Marvel has seen way more success than it has failures regarding announced or rumored movies actually being made.

After being riddled with script issues, filmmakers stepping away, and essentially everything else that could go wrong for around seven years, it seems as though Marvel Studios has officially thrown the prospect of making an MCU Blade film in the garbage can. Since the film was announced in 2019, with Mahershala Ali set to star as the titular character, it has never been able to get off the ground, and Marvel has now given up on it.

Notably, this marks the 5th time in Marvel Studios history that a feature film developed and then announced by the studio was subsequently canceled, and only the second time in recent years (possibly the third, if rumors are true about another project that has faced its fair share of issues). For reference, Marvel most recently canceled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which was originally set to premiere in 2025. That movie was replaced by Avengers: Doomsday, which is coming out in December 2026.

Specifically, both Ali and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have alluded that Blade will never happen, with Ali saying, "If they wanted to do it, we would have done it."

Blade's cancellation doesn't necessarily come as a surprise. Multiple directors joined and then left the project over the years, the script was changed seemingly every other day, and it seemed as though Marvel never actually knew what direction it wanted the movie to go in.

Canceling movies is not a common practice at Marvel Studios. As mentioned, over the past few years, only one title has been shelved, and it largely had to do with the fact that its lead actor was arrested and fired by Marvel Studios. For the most part, Marvel does a good job at giving fans what they promise.

However, it is important to note that Disney and Marvel Studios have alluded that the output of Marvel movies is going to decrease in the coming years. Many fans would agree that, for a while, the MCU was simply pumping out too many projects.

It is no secret that the American economy isn't in a great place currently, meaning inflation forces companies like Disney to cut back on what it can greenlight. 

This sentiment was recently reinforced in a report that detailed how Marvel Studios is also going to be cutting back on the output of its Disney+ shows. After VisionQuest is released, Marvel doesn't even have another major limited series lined up.

Fans are still going to get yearly seasons of TV shows like X-Men '97, Daredevil: Born Again, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but it seems as though Marvel is not planning on making that many high-budget, cinematic limited series with its biggest characters. Those are simply too expensive.

Notably, fans didn't receive any announcements regarding a new MCU TV show at D23 2026, proving that Marvel is going to slow down on the television side. That doesn't mean that there aren't shows in development behind the scenes, but it does mean that Marvel is likely re-evaluating its television strategy and is being way more selective than in the past.

It is also important to note that Blade is not the only upcoming MCU movie that has been seemingly canceled. There is at least one other that is rumored to be permanently on the shelf, and based on how things go for Marvel and the entertainment industry in general, it is possible that more movies could get quietly canceled in the future. 

As mentioned, it hasn't happened too often, but Marvel Studios is no stranger to canceling movies, especially in its early days.

Every Marvel Studios Movie That Got Announced But Then Canceled

Runaways

Once upon a time, Marvel Studios announced that a Runaways movie was in development. Obviously, this movie never came to fruition, and was canceled, but it was developed into a Hulu television series that was set in the MCU. The idea for the movie originally came about all the way back in 2008, the same year that Iron Man premiered. 

After Iron Man's success, and the success of the rest of the Phase 1 movies, specifically the Phase-ending Avengers flick, it was clear to Marvel that Runaways wouldn't really fit into its current plans, so the movie was canceled.

However, a script for the film does exist, as confirmed by Kevin Feige in a 2014 Q&A as shared by Slash Film. Specifically, Feige stated that the script is in Marvel Studios' vault, and that it was always something the company talked about making. As mentioned, it ended up becoming a television show.

Inhumans

At San Diego Comic-Con in 2014, Marvel Studios announced that a film titled Inhumans would be released in April 2016 and serve as a part of the MCU's Phase 3. However, shortly after its announcement, the movie was canceled and never made it to the MCU.

However, like Runaways, Inhumans was turned into a TV show. It is impossible to know what the movie would have been like, but Marvel Studios seemingly dodged a bullet, as the Inhumans series was widely criticized and poorly received.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

As mentioned, the most recent canceled movie from Marvel Studios was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The Kang Dynasty was originally going to be released in 2025 and be the first Avengers title since 2019's Endgame. Loki and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania directly set up The Kang Dynasty by getting fans familiar with Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror.

However, Majors was arrested, which eventually led to him getting fired by Marvel Studios. The Kang Dynasty was scrapped altogether and turned into Doomsday. Fans will have to wait until Doomsday is released to know for sure, but it seems as though Doomsday will be a step-up from what The Kang Dynasty would have been.

Armor Wars

There has been no confirmation from Marvel Studios that the Don Cheadle-led feature film titled Armor Wars has been definitively canceled. However, there really have not been any updates about it at all, leaving many to believe that Marvel quietly shelved it and has no plans for it to actually go into production.

Like many of its other canceled movies, Marvel seemingly had a lot of issues with Armor Wars. At one time, it was supposed to be a Disney+ series, but then it was announced that it would be a film. Like Blade, it is likely that Marvel Studios simply doesn't know what to do with Armor Wars and is struggling to find a place to put it.

Other Canceled MCU Movie Projects

Dazzler

According to reports from all the way back in 2010, Marvel Studios was planning on developing a smaller feature film about Dazzler, a more obscure Marvel character who fans actually thought would show up in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine.

According to the report, Marvel was looking at creating movies centered around lesser-known characters, and the goal was for those movies' budgets to only be between $20-40 million. One of the characters who was set to receive a solo movie was Dazzler, but it obviously never came to pass.

Ka-Zar

Another obscure Marvel character who was being considered for a smaller film in 2010 was Ka-Zar, a human who lived in the Savage Land in the Antarctic region. Of every possible Marvel Studios film, Ka-Zar's would have undoubtedly been the most surprising, as he is not a character many general moviegoers would know.

Like Dazzler, Ka-Zar never got the chance to be featured in his own film. However, that doesn't mean that he won't ever make an appearance in the MCU.

Luke Cage

According to that same report, Marvel Studios was also looking to develop a movie about Luke Cage in 2010, which is extremely interesting considering he would later go on to be featured in Netflix's Marvel universe, and now he is making his MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3. Talk about a full-circle moment.

At the time the Luke Cage film was being talked about internally at Marvel Studios, the character was still relatively unknown to non-comic book fans. Like the other more obscure characters, Luke Cage's movie was canceled.

Power Pack

Power Pack is a superhero team consisting of four siblings named Alex, Julie, Katie, and Jack Power. That same 2010 report detailed that Marvel was looking at making a movie about the team, but it obviously never went into production or got officially announced.

Most likely, those movies about the lesser-known heroes that were being teased in 2010 were shelved due to the success of the MCU. At that time, Iron Man had been released, but Marvel had no idea that Captain America, Thor, and The Avengers would be as successful as they were and catapult an interconnected franchise that would gross billions.

Iron Fist

In 2009, it was reported by Variety that Marvel was looking to hire writers to pen scripts for multiple upcoming films set in the MCU. One of those movies was going to feature Iron Fist as the main character, but it never really got off the ground.

Notably, Marvel Studios got as far as hiring Rich Wilkes to write the screenplay, so there were definitely some fairly concrete plans for the movie to actually go into production, but the success of Phase 1 made Marvel completely change its outlook on the franchise.

Cable

That same 2009 report detailed that Marvel Studios was also looking at developing a movie about Cable. Interestingly, Cable would later become a more prominent character in the eyes of general movie fans, as he played a role in the Deadpool franchise in the 2010s.

If original plans had gone through, though, fans would have seen Cable at the center of his own film. However, like the Iron Fist movie, Cable's feature never happened and was canceled.

Nighthawk

Nighthawk is a Marvel superhero who was introduced in the late 1960s in the comics. Notably, he was often tied to the Defenders, meaning he could eventually show up in the MCU when the Defenders get back together in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 and beyond, but at one point, Marvel Studios wanted to produce a movie entirely focused on Nighthawk.

Obviously, the film never went into production and was never released, meaning that it was canceled.
