Eternals Villain Explained: Who Is Entangling Angelina Jolie's Marvel Hero In the New Trailer?

As Marvel Studios continues the promotional tours for both What If...?'s run on Disney+ and the upcoming debut of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in theaters, fans are looking ahead to the November release of Chloé Zhao's Eternals.

The third theatrical release of 2021 finally received its long-awaited second trailer which filled in many of the gaps on what the team will be facing in this new addition to the MCU narrative. From teasing the effects of the Infinity Stones to showing off the team's incredible superpowers, the stage is set for fans to enjoy a thrilling new adventure after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Much more in this trailer than the first one from May 2021, Marvel Studios gave an in-depth look at Eternals' main villains - the Deviants. Richard Madden's Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani's Kingo, and more were shown using their abilities against these monstrous alien beings, and the dialogue also teased their emergence thanks to their creators, the Celestials.

Possibly the most powerful of these creatures was put into the spotlight as well as he went up against a key leader of the Eternals.

In the second full trailer for Marvel Studios' Eternals, Angelina Jolie's Thena is taken captive by the villainous Deviant Kro.

Kro is depicted as a green amorphous being with four eyes and shape-shifting abilities that he uses against Thena to take her captive.

The two are in an undisclosed cave location, which could be Kro's home base, as the villain wraps his appendages around Thena's entire body.

There are no indications of why Thena is in the cave alone with Kro, although he appears to have her in quite a difficult situation.

Thena's eyes are also glowing bright white as Kro creepily caresses her face. It's unclear whether she's about to try to use her own powers against the villain or if he has her incapacitated in some sort of trance.

While there isn't a lot of context given toward what's happening in this scene with Kro and Thena, there's clearly the possibility that Angelina Jolie's hero is in a world of trouble.

Kro is known as one of Marvel Comics' most notable shape-shifters, although his powers are different than those of the Skrulls from Captain Marvel and other Phase 3 and 4 projects. The villain has been known to transform into versions of the Devil just to scare the daylights out of humans through the comics, and his powers certainly appear to be formidable just from this shot alone.

The shot of these two is particularly interesting considering they're closely tied to one another in Marvel Comics, with Thena even being the mother of Kro's children on occasion. While it seems unlikely that Marvel Studios would go fully down this route in the Eternals' first outing, it seems likely that parts of the plot will tease these intimate bonds.

Whatever leads Thena into this situation with Kro, it seems clear that she will have a bone to pick with him as he causes expected chaos on Earth for her family. Fans will be curious to see if their past is what brings the Eternals together again, but no matter what pulls them back to each other, Kro has a chance to be quite the powerful force against Marvel's team of immortals.

Eternals is set to release in theaters on November 5, 2021.
