Disney Delays Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel 2

Marvel Studios has a plethora of exciting projects set to premiere soon. The rest of the year will bring Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ms. MarvelThor: Love and ThunderShe-Hulk, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and more. That surely won't stop fans from looking ahead to 2023 to anticipate what is in store for them; projects such as The MarvelsGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

One of the MCU's strongest avengers will return The Marvels, currently set for release in February 2023. Not much is known about the plot, but it will feature Brie Larson's Captain Marvel teaming up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan as they take on a cosmic threat of some sort.

Now it seems that Disney has thrown a wrench into the world's reunion with Carol Danvers. Instead of her upcoming team-up project going first, the space-faring story is set to swap places with a far larger, yet smaller, feature film.

The Marvels and Ant-Man Make A Swap

Variety reported that the upcoming Marvel Studios film The Marvels is swapping release dates with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly-led project will now drop on February 17, 2023, while the sequel to Brie Larson's Captain Marvel is now set to arrive on July 28, 2023. The report also stated that the decision was made due to Quantumania having wrapped production, whereas The Marvels still has more filming left.

Another Disney Delay for The Marvels

Disney has been moving around its slate of Marvel Studios films far more than usual within the last year or so, and these two films are another product of that. Thankfully, in this case, there's no loss for the fans, as no release spots were abolished completely.

But why the swap? There are multiple possibilities. Maybe Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is far more along in production than anticipated, leaving it ready to go earlier than expected. Perhaps The Marvels is a little behind as well, a situation which would call for an easy swap by putting Paul Rudd's fourth outing as the shrinking hero back in its original spot as Brie Larson's sequel got the extra time it needs.

Another reason could have something to do with the Disney+ shows Secret Invasion and Loki Season 2. Both projects have heavy ties to the previously mentioned films. Maybe the production cycle of those are getting in the way of the originally planned order of events, but more will be revealed about those details as the projects move closer to their debuts.

Quantumania drops into theaters on February 17, 2023, while The Marvels lands on July 28, 2023.
