Marvel Studios is hard at work on more than a handful of Phase 4 entries, including the MCU's first ever fourth solo movie for any starring hero. This will come with Chris Hemsworth's Thor: Love and Thunder, which is quickly gaining a reputation for having one of the most expansive casts of any non-Avengers movie in the series.
Along with Natalie Portman's Jane Foster and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, director Taika Waititi will make his glorious return as the hilarious rock monster Korg. Additionally, Jamie Alexander's Lady Sif will make an unexpected return after nearly a decade away from the MCU, and the Guardians of the Galaxy will make an appearance after hosting Thor on the Benetar at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
There are also a couple other interesting cast members returning from Thor: Ragnarok, and news has come confirming that they will play their same roles from 2017.
FAKE THOR & LOKI MAKE A REAL MCU RETURN
The Daily Telegraph has revealed images from the set of Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder that seem to confirm Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles as fake Loki and fake Thor. The tweet with the images of the two veteran actors can be seen below:
Another set photo reveals that the two are dressed in Thor and Loki's Earth outfits from Odin's Norway death scene in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok. The full tweet with these images from user @lovethundernews can be seen below:
WHY ARE THESE ASGARDIAN ACTORS BACK?
This is an interesting development considering Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth’s characters only had a few short moments of screen time in Thor: Ragnarok.
The two were the core cast of “The Tragedy of Loki of Asgard,” the tribute play that the God of Mischief put on for himself while he was masquerading as the Allfather in Thor’s absence. Originally thought to be fun cameos for fans to enjoy in the early stages of this movie, it’s somewhat of a shock to see the two acting out a new scene in Thor: Love and Thunder.
With no plot details revealed yet, it will be intriguing to find out just how another theatrical production will play into the story of this fourth solo movie. It’s also unknown if Damon or Hemsworth’s roles will be more substantial, but it will be fun to see their returns nonetheless.
On the other hand, these pictures seem to connect to images that leaked a couple of days ago showing a large stage with a painted background and curtains. The potential is certainly there for New Asgard to host a show just as the original Asgard did in the third Thor film, but fans are certainly curious if this will be expanded upon in the next entry.
Filming continues in Australia for Thor: Love and Thunder, which will release in theaters on May 6, 2022.
