Lucasfilm is in the midst of a major expansion for the Star Wars universe, currently streaming The Bad Batch on Disney+ with plans for much more in the next couple of years. This is headlined by outings like Temura Morrison’s The Book of Boba Fett, but it will also include a return to theaters.

One of these theatrical movies is Rogue Squadronintroducing a new era of starfighter pilots likely after the events of 2019’s Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will take her talents to Lucasfilm to helm this outing, although no other major details are known due to its release being more than two years away.

That has changed, however, thanks to reports revealing this movie’s head writer.

ROGUE SQUADRON HAS ITS WRITER

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lucasfilm hired Matthew Robinson to write the script for the 2023 Star Wars movie Rogue Squadron, which will be directed by Patty Jenkins.

It's unclear how long Robinson has been attached to the film, although he is reportedly working hard to get a draft of the script prepared.

Robinson has written and co-written a number of bigger budget movies in recent years, including 2016's Monster Trucks, 2019's Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and 2020's Love and Monsters.

Rogue Squadron is hoping to go into pre-production sometime this fall before shooting in 2022.

STAR WARS' NEXT MOVIE MOVING FORWARD

While fans hoping for some kind of epic crossover between Dora The Explorer and Star Wars may not have their wishes granted, Robinson's inclusion should only help Lucasfilm deliver another great project.

Considering Robinson's recent track record with successful blockbusters, he should fit in seamlessly with the multi-billion dollar franchise that's thrived for nearly five decades. He's also set to pen the script for the upcoming Little Shop of Horrors reboot, but Rogue Squadron will easily be his most high-profile outing to date.

Now that Rogue Squadron has its director and writer set, fans will be on the lookout for more names joining the fray even with nearly two and a half years until its theatrical release.

While this is a movie focused mostly on fighter pilots in outer space, the shooting and post-production will be a massive endeavor for Jenkins to take on. In the end, with Lucasfilm supporting her and the team, this should be the perfect outing to come as Star Wars' first movie in what will have been nearly four full years.

Rogue Squadron is set to release in theaters on December 22, 2023.
