One of the most surprising Star Wars-related announcements from Disney's Investor Day Event in December 2020 was that of Patty Jenkins' Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.
For the Wonder Woman director, Rogue Squadron will be Jenkins' first foray into that galaxy far, far away. And, according to her, the story will be completely original and follow a new generation of starfighter pilots.
With a looming December 2023 release date, Jenkins alluded to her story treatment and a screenwriter who she wants to "have his own proper announcement."
But, instead of the yet-to-be-named writer, the first confirmed crew member joining Jenkins' Rogue Squadron crew is actually from her time at Warner Bros.
PATTY JENKINS' ROGUE SQUADRON ADDS WONDER WOMAN DESIGNER
According to The Ronin, Production Designer Aline Bonetto is now attached to Rogue Squadron following her work on Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. Again, this announcement is somewhat surprising since Jenkins' scriptwriter is still incognito.
The designer is known for creating both mythological places like Diana's home of Themyscira and historical locations in war-torn Europe.
ALWAYS IN MOTION IS THE FUTURE OF STAR WARS
For fans familiar with the Wonder Woman franchise, Bonetto's confirmed connection offers an idea of what the overall aesthetic of Rogue Squadron could be.
Considering Star Wars' rich mythology, and the fact war and battle are central themes, Bonetto's part work could very well complement a story within the Star Wars Universe.
However, it's important to note that Star Wars has an aesthetic all its own which may present some creative challenges for Bonetto and others involved with creating the look of the film.
Even though pre-production for Rogue Squadron is underway, Jenkins is also tied to Wonder Woman 3 and Cleopatra, both starring Gal Gadot.
Plus, she isn't the only director working on an upcoming Star Wars film as The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson is still said to be working on a trilogy, and Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi is also writing and directing a Star Wars film.
In addition, the current direction of Star Wars storytelling is centered on Disney+ due to The Mandalorian and other upcoming series like The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, and more releasing in the near and far future.
Whether Lucasfilm intends for films from Jenkins, Johnson, and Waititi to connect to one another and the Disney+ series in the Marvel style or simply stand-alone is yet to be seen.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is scheduled to release on December 22, 2023.
