Robert Downey Jr. and Joe Russo Tease Future Marvel Movie

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been maximizing the use of social media in the past days to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the film's premiere. Recently, the Russo brothers reflected on the global impact of the film and recalled their emotional experience when they snuck into a public theater to experience the movie with a general audience, while also sharing clips of fan reactions during that experience. The directing duo, along with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, have shared numerous bits of information about Endgame when they assembled with fans during the Quarantine Watch Party of the film.

One of the emotional moments of Endgame is the death of Tony Stark, and a major question among fans is the character's potential return in the future of the MCU. Anthony Russo recently addressed that Downey's return "has to be earned" and "it has to surprise and shock audiences." Now, the other half of the directing duo and Robert Downey Jr. may have teased that there is a possibility that they could return in the MCU down the road.

NEWS

In an Instagram Live session hosted by Joe Russo during the Quarantine Watch Party , Robert Downey Jr. was a special guest and the pair teased that they could work together again for a future project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here's how the conversation between the two went down:

Joe Russo: I would say it feels like you go to summer camp and then they yank it away from, because we do have a lot of fun working on these things together. Everyone has a lot of fun, you get real close to reach other and then you miss it. Maybe we'll have to do it again some day.

Robert Downey Jr.: The people, they will move us toward what they want .

WHAT THIS MEANS

Robert Downey Jr. has revealed that he was content with the ending of his character during Avengers: Endgame . However, this doesn't discount the possibility of the character returning in some form down the road. After all, this is a comic book movie franchise that already saw numerous resurrections .

The possible return of Downey as an alternate version of his character during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could only serve as a potential cameo, and fans would likely be disappointed if that's the case. Many fans would agree that the return of a character like Tony Stark should serve as a role bigger than a cameo appearance.

There is another possibility for the character to return and it is a project that the Russo Brothers have also been vocal about in the past: Secret Wars . The comic book crossover event could serve as an inspiration for another ensemble film in the MCU, which could be similar to what Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame delivered to fans.

The crossover event deals with one concept that the MCU is about to introduce, which is the multiverse. This could present a perfect opportunity for Downey to return as Iron Man, without erasing his heroic sacrifice in Endgame . The crossover event could even see the return of Chris Evan's Captain America and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. While this could be a few years down the road, an event like Secret Wars could rival Endgame in terms of the number of characters and possible surprises that would give fans the same reaction they had during the latter's premiere across the globe.
