DC Comics is back in a big way. While 2021 only had The Suicide Squad, by the time this year is done, the world will be half-a-dozen DC projects heavier. The first big film out of the gate was Matt Reeves' The Batman, which saw Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight go up against Paul Dano's Riddler. The film has become a massive box office success, starting Warner Bros.' year out on the right footing.
After that, audiences will get to witness Black Adam, The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Batgirl. But even with these embarrassments of riches, it's hard not to look forward to what comes after.
One of the biggest original franchises set to make its debut next year is Blue Beetle. The project, which was once a streaming venture, is now a full-fledged theatrical release that will see Zolo Mariduena take on the role of Jaime Reyes.
In the comics, Reyes was the third in the line of people to take on the mantle of a hero who wields the Blue Beetle Scarab, an alien artifact that grants the user supernatural powers—think along the lines of an alien Iron Man suit.
Now, additional cast members have been announced for the upcoming project, who are set to join Mariduena on this bold project.
Blue Beetle Gets Additional Cast
According to Deadline, What We Do In the Shadows star Harvey Guillen is in talks to join the upcoming Warner Bros. DC Comics film Blue Beetle. Details on who the actor will be playing were not revealed.
Additionally, The Wrap revealed that both Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo will be joining Guillen in the DC superhero movie. Marquezine is set to play the female lead role and love interest, while Escobedo will be bringing to life Milagros Reyes, the younger sister of leading hero Jaime Reyes.
Guillen is known for roles in Werewolf Within and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Escobedo will be in the upcoming film Hocus Pocus 2, and Marquezine is relatively new on the scene.
The Blue Beetle is Coming
It is strange that out of the bunch, Gullien is the only one who doesn't have character details attached to him. Could he be playing the villain? The actor doesn't immediately line up obviously with any of the hero's rogues' gallery, so it's hard to tell.
Not much is known about the plot of the upcoming film. The biggest question many fans have is, given Reyes is the third Blue Beetle within the mantle's legacy, will either of the two previous people to take on the Scarab be in the movie?
The most likely one to make an appearance would be Ted Kord, who has easily been the biggest name attached to the character. Could fans possibly see a situation similar to what Hank Pym and Scott Lang have in the comics?
Oddly enough, Jaime's version of the Blue Beetle crossed paths with Christopher Smith's Peacemaker at one point in the comics. Maybe fans will be able to see a crazy crossover like that in the future. After all, John Cena's character won't be going anywhere any time soon.
Blue Beetle releases in theaters worldwide on August 18, 2023, and Peacemaker is currently streaming on HBO Max.
