WARNING: This article contains potentially spoiler-filled images from The Marvels.
Brie Larson's Captain Marvel is set to make a glorious return to the MCU in just over a year with her second solo movie The Marvels premiering in early 2023.
Just like many of the MCU's other Phase 4 outings, The Marvels will feature a team-up effort of epic proportions as Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris make their MCU movie debut. Both of them will have already played their roles of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau in the Disney+ shows Ms. Marvel and WandaVision, although The Marvels will be likely their first time making their impact on the big screen.
Vellani's Ms. Marvel is arguably the biggest current mystery in this regard, as her solo series, which was initially set to premiere in Late 2021, is now aiming to arrive on Disney+ in Summer 2022.
Adding to that mystery is the fact that The Marvels has managed to keep its production completely under wraps, not allowing any sneak peeks into what's been filming. That now changes in a big way thanks to a social media blast with the first look at a key character in what appears to be a major action sequence.
Behind The Scenes of Marvel Studios' The Marvels
Twitter user @Andrewsvisual shared five leaked images from the set of Marvel Studios' The Marvels, which is currently set to debut in theaters on February 17, 2023.
The highlight of these images is a full look at Iman Vellani reprising the role of Kamala Khan as she boasts her new superhero outfit while getting touchups on her make-up.
This costume is significantly more red than her first Ms. Marvel suit that will be introduced in the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. The new suit still bolsters a large lightning bolt covering the front chest, in addition to gold and red boots:
BREAKING: The first set photo from #TheMarvels has surfaced online - showing Iman Vellani suited up as Ms. Marvel! pic.twitter.com/z9z2C9TpDu
In front of Vellani's Ms. Marvel sits a man in blue face for an alien soldier role, indicating that this scene is extraterrestrial in nature.
Two of these photos show off a constructed town set made up of sandstone buildings and a stone path. The architectural features of the structures, specifically the windows and archways, do feel otherworldly. A closer look at these images appears to show rubber mat tiles on part of the ground along with a rigged up stuntperson, indicating that some action was filmed at this location.
Also included is an image of a woman in silver alien armor with a layer of maroon fabric underneath. It's possible that this could be a stunt double for Zawe Ashton's villain character, whose specific role is still being kept under wraps.
The First Look at The Marvels Is Here
As is usually the case with early set leaks like this one, it's difficult to decipher any specific plot details coming to life in the MCU's first 2023 movie. Even so, they are exciting nonetheless thanks to the first tease of Ashton's undisclosed villain and a great look at Vellani's young Captain Marvel superfan.
The first full Ms. Marvel superhero costume is something close to comic-accurate, although this new one takes the original design and gives it a true upgrade that appears to have been "professionally" designed. Using more red than blue in the costume the way Captain Marvel did in her Avengers: Endgame attire, the story behind Kamala Khan's new suit in this movie should make for a fun supporting plot point.
All things considered, this is an exciting first look at The Marvels. Filming for the sequel is now officially complete as it goes into post-production to prep for its February 17, 2023 release date.
