Even though Marvel Studios is poised to introduce a slew of new characters to the MCU in the coming months via both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals, the role of Captain America has anything but diminished in Marvel's Phase 4.
Marvel's second Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, followed Sam Wilson's personal journey to wield the shield. Meanwhile, What If...?, Marvel's first-ever animated series, dedicated its premiere episode to exploring Peggy Carter becoming Captain Carter instead of Steve Rogers as Captain America.
Apparently, that trend looks to continue as Marvel Studios is already laying the groundwork for Wilson's Cap to return, but this time, on the big screen.
ANTHONY MACKIE CONFIRMED FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA 4
According to Deadline, the MCU's new Captain America, Anthony Mackie, has closed a deal to star in Marvel Studios' Captain America 4.
Mackie's most recent appearance in the MCU was in Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+ with Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. The outlet reported that Stan's reprisal in this upcoming film is currently uncertain as is the film's projected release date.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Malcolm Spellman, along with the staff writer Dalan Musson, are reportedly writing the script for Captain America 4. The film's director has yet to be announced.
WILSON WIELDING THE SHIELD ON THE BIG SCREEN
Since the unofficial title is Captain America 4, the film looks to be Mackie's first as a Marvel lead since his debut in Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014.
Malcolm Spellman's involvement with the script indicates that audiences will revisit Sam Wilson's story from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and possibly similar themes and elements from the Disney+ series.
In addition, Carl Lumbly, who delivered a powerful performance in the show as former super-soldier Isaiah Bradley, has expressed his willingness to return to the MCU.
It's possible that Captain America 4 could be a Falcon and the Winter Soldier reunion in more ways than one.
Regardless, it's great to learn that Marvel Studios is already paving the way to continue Sam Wilson's story and utilize his own strengths as the new generation's Captain America.
All episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are streaming on Disney+.
