Marvel Studios' first animated venture, What If...?, has been taking a deep dive into the vast multiverse like never before. Every week, an alternate take on the MCU's well-known storylines is showcased, giving new roles to famous characters like the late Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa and Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter.

The fifth episode of What If...? has been confirmed to feature a vastly different storyline inspired by Avengers: Infinity War. Marketing revealed that the installment will unveil the animated debut of Earth's Mightiest Zombies, where the Avengers are infected by an unknown virus.

So far, there has only been a minimal amount of promotional footage for the episode. Scenes such as Bucky fighting a zombified Steve Rogers and the Avengers arriving for the mission are examples of what has been revealed, thus allowing fans to speculate on what started the apocalyptic ordeal in the first place

Now, a new clip has emerged, giving fans a preview of this mysterious animated storyline of the MCU.

A Zombified Version of Avengers: Infinity War

Many would agree that this clip manages to give a solid preview of what's to come in the episode. Based on what's been revealed, it's safe to say that the What If...? installment will showcase moments from Avengers: Infinity War with a zombified twist, and this scene is a fitting example.

In the scene, it looks like Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner appears to have just returned to Earth after being transported by Heimdall, but it seems that Doctor Strange and Wong were nowhere to be found when he arrived. It remains to be seen how Tony Stark succumbed to the virus, but it's reasonable to assume that he was the one who infected the two sorcerers.

Given that the trio managed to also infect Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, it looks like the zombified forces will be stronger than ever, and it will be interesting to find out if other members of Thanos' children like Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive will become members of the undead as well.

If this is purely based on Infinity War's storyline, there's a strong chance that Thor alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy could end up saving the day, serving as a similar moment to the 2018 MCU blockbuster. The cosmic heroes have enough firepower to combat the undead, and it's also possible that other survivors like Zombie Hunter Spider-Man and Bucky will join the fight.

That said, it's reasonable to assume that a full-blown fight between the remaining heroes and the powerful undead will be heavily featured in the installment.

The first four episodes of What If...? are now streaming on Disney+, while the fifth installment will debut on September 8, 2021.
