In recent years, many Star Wars actors have had the unfortunate distinction of being harassed and humiliated for the characters they play. Few in the Star Wars universe have received treatment as harsh as Jar Jar Binks, played by Ahmed Best. The actor has chronicled the massive difficulties he experienced following the vitriol he received, but has continued to support the character and act as an excellent ambassador for Star Wars.
Best was met with thunderous applause at Celebration Chicago's panel commemorating the 20th anniversary of The Phantom Menace, a show of appreciation from all of the fans who grew up on Jar Jar and love the character, despite his goofy quirks. The actor will be returning to Star Wars for Jedi Temple Challenge as a Jedi Master, guiding young students to triumph. As fans eagerly await the debut of the YouTube series, Best has been interacting with them, and commented on the prospects of playing the Bombad General again...
Ahmed Best shared on Twitter that he would be open to playing Jar Jar Binks, given that the story is adequate:
WHAT THIS MEANS
A decade ago this may have sounded crazy, but many Star Wars fans would be thrilled to see Jar Jar Binks again. While the Gungan was unpopular with the older crowd, Jar Jar has made millions of kids laugh and holds a special place in the hearts of the Prequel generation. Ahmed Best has been nothing but kind and generous to Star Wars fans, and seeing the talented actor tackle the role again would be a treat.
When we last saw Jar Jar, he was a clown who entertained and befriended a young boy in Aftermath: Empire's End. The character's appearance was a true case of art imitating life, as he drew the disdain of the adults in the crowd but won over the heart of a kid. There are countless ways to incorporate Jar Jar into future stories, either during his time as a Senate representative, during the reign of the Empire, or even into Sequel territory and beyond.
It couldn't be more exciting to have Ahmed Best back in the Star Wars universe, and we hope he can someday bring Jar Jar back to endear another generation of fans.
