The Book of Boba Fett brought back Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker in a major way, with one installment of the show exploring the aftermath of The Mandalorian Season 2's explosive finale. Hamill returned during the sixth episode of the show alongside a plethora of shocking characters that included Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka, Grogu, and Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin. The surprise appearances earned a positive reception from fans, easily conquering the trending topics on social media.

Amid all the cameos, one of the highly-talked-about moments is Luke's unexpected return. Star Wars confirmed then that actor and voice artist Graham Hamilton was credited as the Jedi's "Performance Artist" during the episode, with him saying that it is "one of the most magical and fulfilling creative experiences" of his life.

A report has also revealed how Luke Skywalker's voice was created, leading fans to wonder how much Hamill was involved in The Book of Boba Fett's production.

Now, more details have been revealed regarding Hamill's inclusion in the Disney+ series.

Mark Hamill Returns for Book of Boba Fett

In the latest episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, which was released early in South Korea, Lucasfilm confirmed that Mark Hamill was present during the production of the Disney+ series while also revealing more details about his involvement.

Hamill admitted that the process is "new" to him and Graham Hamilton, Luke's stand-in, so they are just "trying to give the filmmakers everything they need." The Luke Skywalker actor described his return as a "composite performance:"

“It’s a process that’s new to both of us, so we’re just trying to give the filmmakers everything they need. I’ve done all aspects, theater, radio, television, movies. Each one of them has its specific requirements. But this is a completely new aspect. With this, it’s a composite performance. Not just from the stunt double, but input from the director and what’s on the page, all of these elements coming together so that it’s an ongoing learning experience.”

The Book of Boba Fett director and executive producer Dave Filoni shared that "the key" is having Hamill on the set, mainly because it means a lot to the Star Wars legend:

“The key is having Mark there, because you get how much it means to him. This character. You understand that as you see him there and just the look in his eye when he would watch Graham [Hamilton] performing, this sense of pride, I think, that he had in watching that committed performance and that he was a part of it.”

Filoni also pointed out that Hamill and Hamilton "really had to fuse" to make the scenes work for the show:

“Mark and Graham, they really had to fuse and become Luke, and Mark had to share all his knowledge of what it means to be Luke. Just very special for all of us.”

David Klein, the show's director of photography, revealed a detailed breakdown of Hamill's time during filming:

“We would do takes with Mark, and then we would do takes with Graham, and it was always one camera because we had what’s called a flux rig on our camera, which is basically two small IR cameras on either side of our taking lens… and Graham has infrared invisible dots on his face. Some visible, some invisible. And it works really well. But ownership of that character belongs to Mark.”

Here's a short clip from the Disney Gallery episode:

Mark Hamill's Passion for Star Wars

The Star Wars legend previously shared that playing Luke Skywalker again was, to him, "almost a responsibility," admitting that he couldn't say no if asked to return. The actor's latest return in The Book of Boba Fett is a testament to his previous claim, with him once again showcasing his passion for the franchise.

It's fitting that the collaborative process between the actors involved and The Book of Boba Fett's crew went smoothly behind the scenes, especially considering the extensive work that was needed to pull off Luke Skywalker's surprising comeback.

Rosario Dawson previously revealed she "was freaking out" and is "still pinching [herself]" that she had the chance to work with Hamill, and the stills featured above are solid proof of that. Seeing Ahsoka and Luke together in a live-action series was a dream come true for many Star Wars fans, and admittedly, Dawson's star-struck reaction shows that she's one of the diehards as well.

Given the considerable amount of time needed to bring back Luke, it is unknown if there will be more appearances for the character in the near future. However, Hamill's willingness combined with Lucasfilm's dedication to bringing more stories tied to the Jedi Master should be more than enough reason to keep on banking on the character's return.

The Book of Boba Fett is now streaming on Disney+.
