Season 2 of The Mandalorian blew fans away last year with its incredible production and internet-shattering character cameos . While Mando and Grogu's bond was at the heart of each episode, the question of who would show up next kept fans tuning in each week.
Still, no one expected Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to bring Return of the Jedi -era Luke Skywalker into Mando's story for the Season 2 finale, and many fans still haven't recovered from the shock.
Now, with The Book of Boba Fett still months away from its December release and Season 3 of The Mandalorian yet to begin filming , a special episode about the making of the finale for the Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian is set to debut on August 25 to tide fans over.
And, just ahead of that release, Star Wars has shared a sneak peek of what fans can expect from this upcoming Disney+ special.
MANDALORIAN VIDEO SHOWS MARK HAMILL AS LUKE SKYWALKER
To promote the new episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian , the official Star Wars Twitter account shared a behind-the-scenes video narrated by Lucasfilm Executive Dave Filoni on the filming of Luke Skywalker's cameo.
Amidst clips of Mark Hamill and stand-in actor Max Lloyd-Jones portraying Luke Skywalker, Filoni talked about what seeing Luke meant to Star Wars fans saying, "...you realize they're remembering what it meant to them:"
"...you see your crew just staring at Mark and you realize they're remembering what it meant to them. And you realize you've been a part of constructing something that's giving that experience to people. This good feeling. Fundamentally, Star Wars should deliver a good feeling, an uplifting feeling..."
One of the behind-the-scenes shots from the teaser shows Luke with his back to the camera and his ignited green lightsaber in hand - a similar shot to what Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze saw on a screen in the finale.
Another shot shows the crew filming the moment right before Luke removes his hood and reveals his face. The teaser video even shows that this is a moment Mark Hamill performed.
Finally, it looks like fans can expect plenty of lightsaber action in the August 25 special considering how Luke laid waste to the Dark Troopers on his way to reach Grogu.
DISNEY GALLERY SHOWS FANS THE WAY
While the Luke Skywalker cameo was an absolute gift to Star Wars fans, pulling it off was a true Hollywood marvel.
In an industry where every rumor, leak, and spoiler is spread online, the fact that Luke Skywalker's appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale was a total surprise is, in itself, a surprise.
In addition, bringing a young Luke Skywalker back to the screen was a technological feat that Lucasfilm couldn't afford to get wrong. No doubt, both of these aspects will be covered in the Disney Gallery episode.
Also, considering Dave Filoni's narration, what Luke Skywalker means to fans and what his character represents is a topic that's sure to be explored, likely with words from Mark Hamill himself.
Following the release of Disney's sequel trilogy, Hamill wasn't all that happy with how his character of Luke Skywalker was handled and claimed then that his time as Luke was over . However, the actor had nothing but praise and appreciation for his cameo in The Mandalorian .
It's possible that fans will learn a bit more about Hamill's perspective on his iconic character and how it was just as important to him for Luke to leave fans with that "good feeling, an uplifting feeling."
