The majority of this year's upcoming pop culture conventions have been greatly affected by COVID-19, due to it threatening the health and safety of large gatherings. While most of these events have been cancelled or delayed until a further date, some have opted for an online event as a replacement such as this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

This year's Star Wars Celebration was originally intended to be held on August 27, 2020 at the Anaheim Convention Center. This would have been the second time the convention was to take place there, but it now seems that the event will no longer go on as planned...

REPORT

Through their official Twitter account, it has been announced that this year's Star Wars Celebration has officially been canceled. The event will return to the Anaheim Convention Center in 2022.

In their full statement, Star Wars Celebration state that current ticketholders for the 2020 event will either be able to claim a full refund or transfer their ticket to the 2022 event. If the latter is chosen, the ticketholder will also receive an exclusive Stormtrooper pin.

WHAT THIS MEANS

From this, it appears that Star Wars Celebration will be forgoing a convention in 2021 altogether due to the uncertainty of when it will be safe to hold such a large-scale event. As for when the next big release of Star Wars announcements will occur is currently unknown. No word has been given on the D23 Tokyo Expo 2020, although the official website points to this event being skipped over entirely for this year.

It is possible that some of these announcements will now be brought forward for the Comic-Con at Home event instead. Star Wars has had some large announcements saved for SDCC in the past, with a recent one being the announcement of the latest season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2018. At the very least, it is likely that we can expect to hear about upcoming collectibles and comics coming out of the Star Wars universe.

While it will be a long wait before the next Star Wars Celebration, hopefully, there will be plenty more big announcements and reveals planned to satiate fans in the meantime.
