Director Zack Snyder has spent nearly a decade fully integrating himself with the world of DC Comics, directing or producing nearly every movie in the DC Extended Universe. He started from the franchise's earliest days by directing 2013's Man of Steel, continuing to be directly involved with the franchise until his untimely exit during production for Justice League.
2021 was a huge year for Snyder as he finished work on Zack Snyder's Justice League, which came to HBO Max in March and brought his full vision for the DCEU team-up movie to life.
While Snyder has made his name largely off his work with DC characters, heroes like Batman and Superman are far from the only ones he is passionate about. In one of his more recent interviews, he touched on his frame of mind when it comes to the larger world of comics and comic book movies.
ZACK SNYDER ANSWERS THE TOUGH QUESTIONS
DCEU director/producer Zack Snyder appeared on Wired's Autocomplete Interview series to tackle the most popular Google questions about himself.
One question asked if Snyder writes comic books, to which he responded that he "(has) not written a comic" before. This led him to make a funny note to himself in which he told himself to "write a comic:"
"Does Zack Snyder write comics? I have not written a comic. I should. So maybe after this, I’ll go write a comic. Not to self: write a comic."
Shortly after, a question came regarding if Snyder liked the work from DC's biggest competitor: Marvel. Snyder revealed himself to be a fan of "Marvel movies and...Marvel comics," saying that he's always been a big fan of both the Hulk and Iron Man:
"And then does Zack Snyder like Marvel? I do like Marvel. I like Marvel movies and I like Marvel comics. The Hulk has always been one of my favorites, forever… and Iron Man. The answer is yes, I do like Marvel."
SNYDER SHOWS HIS RESPECT FOR ALL COMICS
Snyder may have built his brand with the DCEU, but he made it clear that he's a fan of Marvel's biggest names as well.
Mentioning major players like Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, the man behind the Snyderverse holds Marvel's top superheroes in high regard with them being so prominent in pop culture. He seemed quick to praise Marvel's movies as well, which have formed one of the industry's biggest franchises as Marvel Studios has built the MCU for more than a decade.
While it doesn't seem likely at this point that he would take his talents to the MCU to make a movie, it's good enough knowing Snyder respects the work the studio continues to put forth.
As for comics, Snyder openly admitted that he hasn't written a comic himself, but he doesn't appear to be against the idea. After working on comic book movies for so many years, he's sure to have found some inspiration for some potential original stories should he follow up on his note to self someday.
For now, Zack Snyder's Justice League is available to stream on HBO Max.
