Dr. Harleen Quinzel (a.k.a. Harley Quinn), known Batman rogue and Joker sidekick, has definitely had a surge of popularity come her way in recent years.
One could argue that this has a lot to do with actress Margot Robbie, who plays the character in the current batch of DC movies. Robbie has brought a certain sense of empowerment to the character, particularly in 2020's Birds of Prey which saw Quinn step out of the Joker's shadow to do what she wanted.
The character also appears in a very popular and well-received, self-titled animated series on HBO Max. The show, while disconnected from the movies, further explores Harley Quinn as her own woman, with her own goals, ambitions, and friends. In the show, she also has a romantic relationship with fellow DC supervillainess, Poison Ivy, a fact that evidently is not lost on Robbie.
A HARLEY QUINN/POISON IVY TEAM-UP?
In an interview with Den of Geek, Margot Robbie, who will next appear in James Gunn's the Suicide Squad, had this to say about bringing Harley's pal Poison Ivy into the DCEU:
"Trust me, I chew their ear off about it all the time. They must be sick of hearing it, but I’m like, ‘Poison Ivy, Poison Ivy. Come on, let’s do it.’ I’m very keen to see a Harley-Poison Ivy relationship on screen. It’d be so fun. So I’ll keep pestering them. Don’t worry.”
YOUR TABLE AWAITS, DR. PAMELA ISLEY
Well, it certainly seems as though Margot Robbie is on top of things! It's quite cool to hear that the actress is campaigning so hard for Poison Ivy's inclusion in the DCEU.
There's a lot that Warner Bros. could do with the character as well. Maybe she could be a main character in a Birds of Prey sequel? Or they could even produce a film focusing entirely on the Quinn/Ivy dynamic and relationship.
Although it is separate from the main DCEU continuity and thus nowhere near Robbie's version of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy could still also show up in a sequel to Matt Reeves' The Batman. Although perhaps that's not entirely ideal, given the fan demand for seeing her interact with Harley.
In any case, as mentioned above, Margot Robbie will next portray Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad, due in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
