Even though the long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn't set to release until 2023, fans won't have to wait too much longer to see James Gunn take another swing at the ragtag cosmic heroes.
In addition to the recently announced Guardians of the Galaxy game, the Guardians have joined the cast of 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder and even have their own Disney+ holiday special in the works.
The last fans saw of the Guardians was in Avengers: Endgame with Thor hitching a ride and Peter Quill's Starlord looking for the 2014 version of Gamora, since the Gamora he had a relationship with was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
No doubt both Thor: Love and Thunder and the holiday special will tease where the Guardians go from here, but fans are already getting some hints from the cast about what to expect.
VIN DIESEL TEASES GROOT RETURNING TO HIS ROOTS
In an interview with ComicBook.com's podcast Phase Zero, Vin Diesel encouraged Brandon Davis to ask Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about "the Groot story he's excited about... The return to Planet X."
A WHOLE PLANET OF GROOTS IN GUARDIANS 3?
While audiences have yet to see this planet on-screen, according to comics, Planet X is Groot's home planet, which he was exiled from in various comic runs.
Considering the Guardians are set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, their own holiday special, and even the I Am Groot animated series, it's hard to tell if Vin Diesel's tease about Planet X would be explored in one of these projects or later on in Guardians 3.
While each member of the Guardians of the Galaxy is memorable, Groot in all of his phases of life has always been a fan-favorite. Seeing a planet of Baby Groots, Adolescent Groots, and Adult Groots is sure to be a huge hit with fans. No wonder Kevin Feige is excited about it.
But exploring Groot's origins is intriguing for another reason. It has long been speculated that Rocket's origins would be explored in an upcoming project since even he's not sure what he is. It's a fact that has troubled the character and contributed to his gruff, sarcastic exterior.
Since Rocket has grown considerably since the original Guardians film, it seems high time to delve into his past. Perhaps Guardians 3 will focus on exploring the backgrounds of both Rocket and Groot? Time will tell. But in the meantime, Groot's Planet X is plenty of be excited about.
