Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may not be the talk of the town right now, but that's going to change in a big way when the calendar flips over to 2022. The Benedict Cumberbatch-starring sequel looks to bring an element of horror into the MCU as Doctor Strange traverses the Multiverse. Alongside Stephen Strange will be other MCU characters like Wanda Maxinoff and newcomer America Chavez.
Other than a possible Fox universe tie-in and the Multiversal element being brought in, not much is actually known about Marvel's first theatrical release of 2022. The project was recently pushed back from its originally announced release date, so info will surely come as the film's release broaches the horizon.
One thing that has been rumored about the project is the introduction of Marvel's underwater realm, something that could see an expansion in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Tying into this, it was reported back in July that giant squid Gargantos would be making an appearance in the film.
And if a recent leak is to be believed, a showdown with the oversized mollusk comes along with its debut.
Doctor Strange Takes on Gargantos
Info for a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Lego set leaked on the Lego Building Instructions app, possibly revealing a conflict with sea monster Gargantos in the upcoming film.
The description listed on the Lego site says:
"Gargantos, the giant, one-eyed monster, spots Doctor Strange, Wong, and America Chavez and wriggles towards the 3 heroes. Will the team's special powers and weapons be enough to defeat the monster or will they be tangled up in tentacles? Only you can decide."
Gargantos is a giant squid-like sea monster seen in the pages of multiple Marvel comics and seems to be taking on the MCU heroes here.
The set comes with Doctor Strange, America, Chavez, and Wong minifigs and is branded as the "Gargantos Showdown" set.
Looking at the box itself, an image of Strange, Chavez, Scarlet Witch and Wong can be seen in full costume.
Life Is Much Better Down Where It's Wetter
The evidence keeps stacking up in favor of Multiverse of Madness introducing the underwater world of the Marvel universe in some way. Sure, a giant squid existing outside of Earth's oceans would not be the craziest thing the MCU has ever pulled, but this is a very special squid.
In the comics, Gargantos is a terrifying beast used in plots by the underwater emperor Naga. Naga rules beneath the waters of the Pacific Ocean, sometimes coming to blows with big aquatic names such as Prince Namor of Atlantis.
If, in fact, Gargantos is starring in the Doctor Strange sequel, this could open up a whole new vertical of the MCU - one that is likely to be explored even further in future movies. However, with the underwater realm rumored to be a large focus in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever it seems unlikely that Multiverse of Madness will do anything more than tease the potential of the aquatic world.
Looking at the box of this Gargantos battle LEGO set it looks as though the characters are on the side of a city building, which could serve as one of the many wild action set-pieces for Doctor Strange as he journies across not just his universe but others as well.
Only time will tell though, as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
