Creature Commandos Season 2 is set to add one major DCU hero with Justice League ties into the mix that could introduce a major shift into Task Force M's dynamic. The ending of Creature Commandos Season 1 introduced a new version of Task Force M following the death of one core member, Nina Mazursky, who was killed by Princess Ilana Rostovic of Pokolistan. Amanda Waller promoted the Bride to become Task Force M's leader, showing a roster that includes Doctor Phosphorus and Weasel, a rebuilt (and upgraded) G.I. Robot, Nosferata, Khalis, and former Suicide Squad member King Shark. Creature Commandos' debut season emphasized that this team is less interested in being good because of the amount of bad imbued in this roster, but a new report could change that.

Captain Atom, the Nathaniel version of the character from DC Comics who has been part of multiple Justice League teams, is set to appear as a recurring character in Creature Commandos Season 2.

The details about Captain Atom's role in the upcoming DCU series are still being kept under wraps, but his inclusion is a significant boost to Creature Commandos as he can be a stabilizing force of good in a team full of morally complex misfits.

In DC Comics, Nathaniel Adam is the post-Crisis Captain Atom, an Air Force officer and Vietnam War veteran whose body was bonded to an alien metal skin during a military experiment. Captain Atom operates as a government-aligned hero — at one point in the comics, it's the government's request for the hero to join the Justice League — whose powers tap the Quantum Field, making him incredibly strong with the ability to fly, near-invulnerability, energy absorption and projection, and matter manipulation.

In the DCU, Captain Atom's origin is tightly guarded, but given the circumstances surrounding Task Force M and his ties to military experiments, it's possible that Atom is the target or the main mission for the team.

There is a chance that Atom is not part of the team; instead, he may be the one they need to save first before eventually incorporating him into their already messy dynamic. There are a myriad of theories on how Captain Atom fits in Creature Commandos' narrative, but one thing is for sure: his inclusion benefits the grand picture of what the DCU animated series is all about.

Creature Commandos is currently deep in post-production and is expected to be released on HBO Max sometime after Man of Tomorrow's 2027 release.

Why Captain Atom Is Exactly What Creature Commandos Season 2 Needs

The interplay between the Task Force M members in Creature Commandos Season 1 worked because everyone on the team was compromised, considering that they are monsters and killers. At the time, Rick Flag Sr. was the closest thing to a heroic figure in Season 1, but Peacemaker Season 2 already turned him into a ruthless villain.

The inclusion of Captain Atom in Creature Commandos Season 2 will greatly benefit the show by giving Task Force M a moral opposite, whether he is the team's actual target on a mission or a full-fledged member. DC Comics lore showed that Atom is trained to treat power as a chain of command, and placing him in a room full of misfits allows him to guide them in a way Rick Flag Sr. couldn't, knowing full well that they have no match against him if they decide to be unruly.

The introduction of Captain Atom (even if it is within the animated space) in Creature Commandos Season 2 makes the show more important by further tying into DC canon and expanding the DCU. This is crucial, especially after Season 1 already linked Belle Reve, Amanda Waller, and Rick Flag Sr. to the DCU's Suicide Squad infrastructure.

Atom's origin could give the DCU a government metahuman program that may be morally corrupt, which Superman and the Justice Gang (the suspected soon-to-be Justice League) may have to deal with in the post-Brainiac landscape of James Gunn's reboot after Man of Tomorrow.

The fact that Captain Atom is a member of the Justice League carries weight because it adds another hero the DCU roster needs to make the team exist at some point in its future. A quantum-powered military asset also sits naturally beside Superman and Supergirl's power-level, making him a valuable ally when another Brainiac-level threat arrives to stir trouble on Earth.
