When Marvel first announced their Phase 4 slate of films, there was one movie in particular that stood out. That film was Thor: Love and Thunder. Why? Well, because it was the first series to go past its trilogy of films, and to get a fourth installment.
For a while, it remained the only one. Though shortly after the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier aired, news hit the web that a Captain America 4 is being developed, with showrunner Malcolm Spellman attached to write. Unlike Thor though, the titular hero wasn't going to be the same.
This time, Captain America was going to be none other than Sam Wilson, AKA Anthony Mackie. It's exciting news, but when did the man behind the shield find out this news for himself?
CAPTAIN AMERICA FINDS OUT ABOUT HIS FOURTH FILM
In an interview with EW, Anthony Mackie revealed the very moment he found out about the recently announced Captain America 4.
"I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store... The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he's like, 'Yo, man. Is this real?!" [holds up a cellphone] "I'm like, 'I haven't heard anything.' That's what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they're like, 'Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what's going on.' So, I'm excited to see what happens, but I haven't heard anything."
When it comes to whether or not the film will be about Anthony Mackie's Captain America, he was quick to joke.
"What would be really bad is if the movie [Captain America 4] starts and I get blown out of the sky,"
There was always talk about whether The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was going to get a second season or not. With the announcement of Captain America 4, Mackie was asked if he knew anything about that.
"[haven't] heard anything about season 2... It's always great to go to work with Sebastian [Stan]. And Kari [Skogland], our director, was amazing. It would be fun as hell to do."
MARVEL, THE KING SECRECY
It's a pretty funny image picturing Anthony Mackie in line at the grocery store, checking out his food, only to be surprised by the fact that he's now getting his own film. However, it's hard to believe that he had no notion of what the future of his character entailed, so the movie is likely not a huge surprise to him—even if he doesn't know all the concrete facts.
Recently Chris Evans claimed to have found out about his potential return alongside everyone else. While it's unclear if he is indeed returning, it just goes to show that actors don't always get the heads-up from Marvel. For example. Emma Fuhrmann had no idea she was replaced as Cassie Lang until she found out with the rest of the world during Disney's investor day announcement.
Nevertheless, the future for Anthony Mackie's Captain America is an exciting one. The character is posed to be in the MCU for a long time, and may even eventually outlast Chris Evans' long tenure with the shield. Only time will tell what his next adventure will entail.
