After eight seasons and over a hundred and fifty episodes, Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen aka, The Green Arrow truly did not fail his city or the universe. During the 5-show-spanning Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, Oliver became the cosmic entity known as The Spectre and used his newfound power to rebuild the multiverse after it had been wiped out by the evil Anti-Monitor.
Oliver died in the process but the new universe he helped birth lives on in the various Arrowverse shows airing on The CW.
But where does all that leave John Diggle, Oliver's closest confidant and incredibly loyal right-hand man on his crusade to bring justice to Star City? In the closing moments of the season finale of Arrow, Diggle approached a meteor that crashed to earth near his house. Inside he found a small box which emitted a bright, green glow when he opened it...
Of course, for many years, fans speculated that Diggle would eventually become a member of the interplanetary space police known as the Green Lantern Corps and this scene in Arrow's very last episode seemed to all but confirm that Dig would don the power ring and suit up as a Green Lantern. Or did it?
WILL JOHN DIGGLE WEAR THE RING?
Speaking to TVLine, Diggle actor, David Ramsey shed some light on the upcoming Arrowverse episodes he'll be directing and appearing in as the character. It was in doing this that Ramsey seemed to shut down the notion that his character would be suiting up as a GL.
"To your other point, which is exploring what has happened to Diggle since encountering that green box, that will be explored in the other episodes – on Batwoman, Flash, Superman & Lois, and Supergirl. Whatever was in the box, he refused the invitation of. Let’s put it like that. But there are consequences to that."
Ramsey was then asked if Diggle or anyone associated with him has “heard tell of a corps of galactic law enforcers," to which the actor gave a strong denial:
"No, we don’t get into that. This is a very, very, very preliminary [look at] what happens from this refusal, and what it means to his destiny. We simply get into the preliminary physical effects of his refusal of whatever it was in that box.
DIG 'REFUSED THE INVITATION.' OR DID HE?
Diggle is set to appear in Superman & Lois, Supergirl, The Flash, and Batwoman. Ramsey will also crop up on Legends of Tomorrow as a "historical Western version" of John.
The question does indeed remain though: Will those first four appearances be having Diggle utter something along the lines of "In brightest day, in blackest night..." and so on?
David Ramsey seems to indicate that no, this will not be happening. According to him, Dig "refused the invitation" to join the Corps. However, he does also mention that there are "consequences" to that action.
It's entirely possible, and perhaps quite likely that Ramsey is merely playing coy here and that they're saving the "Diggle as GL" thing as a big reveal. Fans would certainly be disappointed if this wasn't the case, especially since it was so clearly set up in Arrow Season 8.
David Ramsey's return as John Diggle will happen later this year on Supergirl, The Flash, Batwoman, and Superman & Lois.
