Even though the current pandemic has affected the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has recently confirmed that plans for the third film in the franchise are "exactly the same as they were before coronavirus." While the film has no release date yet, one would assume that it is not likely to premiere until 2023. However, this didn't stop Gunn from teasing several reveals about the franchise in social media. Previously, Gunn joined Comicbook's Quarantine Watch Party where he shared interesting details about the past and future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
Now, Gunn used his Instagram account to interact with fans for a fun Q&A which included potential teases of "someone" dying in the third installment of the Guardians franchise and confirming that there are no current plans for a fourth film. Several of his answers included another batch of interesting reveals about the galaxy's band of misfits which can be viewed below...
Kraglin's Big Role
Kraglin was last seen practicing the use of Yondu's Yaka arrow in the Guardians' ship at the tail end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Kraglin actor Sean Gunn previously revealed that his character is not officially a member of the Guardians even if the character is hanging out with the team. Gunn confirmed in his Q&A that he has big plans for the character in Vol. 3 which could present an opportunity for Kraglin to be an official member of the team by the film's end.
Avengers-Guardians Translators
Before the release of Avengers: Infinity War, fans were intrigued by how the Avengers could understand the Guardians since the latter spoke alien languages. Gunn addressed this concern during the Q&A as he shared that the Guardians used "cybernetically embedded translators that worked both ways."
Gunn doesn't want Thanos to return
In his previous reveal during the Quarantine Watch Party, Gunn described the scene with Thanos during Guardians of the Galaxy as an "extra complication that made the story a lot more difficult to tell." When asked about the villain's potential return during the recent Q&A, Gunn gave a definitive "no" since there are "plenty of other stories to tell." This makes sense given that the villain's arc has already come full circle after the last two Avengers films.
New Guardians Member?
Gunn has confirmed that the next installment of the Guardians franchise will be the last iteration of the current team. This means that there will be new members who will join the team when the credits roll. Since Gunn has also already confirmed that "someone" will die during Vol. 3, there's a possibility that a new member could replace a fallen one. As to who it might be, Gunn was tight-lipped during the Q&A since he is "not sure that his team would be happy with spoilers." Could he be referring to Adam Warlock, who was already teased at the mid-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2?
Baby Groot Dance Scene in Vol.2 took two years to finish
One of the most iconic opening scenes in the MCU is Baby Groot's dance to the tune of Mr. Blue Sky while the Guardians are fighting the Abilisk during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. Gunn has already shared that it was the "greatest title shot ever" since it its creation was such a monumental challenge. During the Q&A, Gunn revealed that the opening scene took over two years to finish - a reveal that is sure to make fans appreciate the scene even more so.
Peter Quill will still have a big role in Vol. 3
Peter Quill experienced quite the character arc during the first two installments of the Guardians franchise. He lost his mother in Vol. 1 yet ended up with a family of his own through his Guardians team. In Vol. 2, he met his celestial father, Ego, but found out that he was just a villainous figure keen on taking over planets. In the end, he lost his closest father figure in the form of Yondu and that experience transformed Peter. However, just because Peter had so many huge moments so far doesn't mean that he will not have a big role in the upcoming film. Gunn simply said "yes" when asked about Peter's potential big role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. One would assume that it would center around the search for the alternate version of Gamora and reminding the character of her heroic self during the first two movies.
Gunn has continued his own set of reveals about the Guardians, much to the delight of MCU fans everywhere. The reveals shared by Gunn give fans a lot to think about before the next installment hit theaters. Considering the recent cancellation of San Diego Comic-Con, directors and actors can take a page from Gunn's playbook when it comes to using social media as a platform to engage with fans while revealing interesting details and teases about past and upcoming movies along the way.
