Warner Bros. Surprised everyone when they announced that they were going to be doing a Shazam! film, something that was a product of their deviation from Zack Snyder's previous direction.

It was clear that they were trying to find some hidden gems in the DC Comics canon, and many would agree that’s exactly what was found. The Zachary Levi film went on to be a huge success and one of the more critically praised DCEU projects at the time.

So, as any sane person would, the studio went on to sanction a sequel: Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film has already wrapped production, but for whatever reason, fans won’t be able to see the final film until June 2, 2023.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has also finished production, hitting theaters on July 29, 2022. For those that know the comics, Black Adam and Shazam share more than a few connections in the source material.

So, when will audiences see the two meet up? At Dragon Con 2021, Zachary Levi was able to express how he’d feel about going up against The Rock, aka Dwayne Johnson—otherwise known as Black Adam.

Zachary Levi vs. The Rock

DC

During Saturday's Shazam!-centric panel at Dragon Con 2021, as attended by The Direct, Zachary Levi was asked by a fan how excited or eager he would be to fight Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson —the man who is playing Black Adam in the upcoming DC Comics film.

Levi responded with a blunt, and funny, response, saying that “[he] would love to punch the Rock:”

“I would love to punch The Rock in the face… it would be a dream.”

The Shazam actor got a little more serious, admitting that “those things are way above my pay grade:”

“Like honestly… all those things are way above my pay grade. I have no idea how all of these things are going to ultimately carve up. I know that he’s a very busy man, and very successful. Again, very busy doing other movies. So, I don’t know if and when there is ever going to be that. I hope so!”

Zachary Levi finished off by admitting that “it would be a bummer if Captain Marvel and Black Adam didn’t have at least their one meeting:”

“Given the comic and the canon and all that stuff, I think it would be a bummer if Captain Marvel and Black Adam didn’t have at least their one meeting, whatever that’s going to be. You know, I’ll just show up and put on the suit…”

Black Adam and Shazam

The moment Shazam! was announced, fans knew that the future would likely hold some version of Black Adam in live-action—especially since Dwayne Johnson has been so vocal about wanting to embody the character.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like the two characters will meet anytime soon. Both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods is pretty separate in their creations, despite both filming in the same city. But according to the powers that be, it doesn’t look likely to happen in either of those projects.

As Levi basically says, it is an inevitability that the two powerhouses will meet up one day. After all, the two characters’ origins are intertwined, and the old wizard from Shazam! is rumored to appear in both films.

It’s hard to think that the third Shazam! film won’t have Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam as a key role—or vice versa with Black Adam’s probable sequel.

Thankfully, fans will have a lot of other DC projects to focus on while they wait for the matchup of the decade to take place on screens across the world.
