While Marvel Studios has taken a bit of a break from their theatrical ventures to start 2022, that dry spell will soon be broken with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looming big on the horizon. The Benedict Cumberbatch-led epic has been teased to break the barriers of reality, which could bring a myriad of cameos including the likes of Patrick Stewart and Hayley Atwell.
MoM has been years in the making as the original Doctor Strange came out back in 2016. Since then, Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange has become quite the MCU figurehead, appearing across franchises including in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home. And if No Way Home knocked on the Multiversal door, Multiverse of Madness is set to break that door down.
A prime example of this can be seen in the bonkers Super Bowl trailer for the film that was just released. And in it was a familiar face that will have fans pumped.
Patrick Stewart in Doctor Strange 2
The latest Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer released before Super Bowl LVI confirmed that Patrick Stewart will appear in the upcoming film.
Stewart is best known for playing Professor X in the Fox-produced X-Men movies and is seemingly reprising his role in the Doctor Strange sequel.
Though not directly shown in the trailer, the veteran actor can be heard saying, "We should tell him the truth."
Strange is seen throughout the trailer in this mysterious facility, leading up to the instance of Stewart's introduction.
Interestingly, the good Doctor seems to be accompanied by a group of Ulton Bots on his way to meeting Professor X.
The full trailer can be seen below, with Stewart's appearance at the 1:20 mark:
The Professor Is In
While it has been rumored for months that Multiverse of Madness will take the cameo chaos seen in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home and run with it, this is confirmation that that is totally the case.
Whispers of Stewart's return have been swirling for months, so if Marvel was going to reveal one of these cameos, Charles Xavier does make a lot of sense. What will be interesting to see though is just how intrinsically tied to the core plot Professor X will be. Is this simply a quick cameo or is he coming along for the ride with Strange, Wanda, and America Chavez.
Yes, it is only a second or two of footage here including the Professor, but his line of "We should tell him the truth" does make it seem that he will be key in furthering this story.
And fans should not be worried that Marvel Studios have offered up all the good stuff in this trailer. If this is what they feel comfortable showing, one has to think about what the studio has hidden up its sleeves still.
Are the rumors of a Tom Cruise as Tony Stark appearance or Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker popping up again all that out there now? No, they are not.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
