New Black Widow synopsis teases dangerous conspiracy

Actress Scarlett Johansson returned as the titular character in the first teaser for Marvel Studios' Black Widow last month , where it was revealed that after the events of Marvel Studios' Captain America: Civil War , Natasha was being hunted by the mysterious Taskmaster.

In the trailer, Romanoff also explained that she was done running from her past as she experienced a "Hell of a reunion" with the introduction to MCU newcomers David Harbour as the Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a character whom Natasha has unfinished business with.

However, what the trailer did not reveal was anything specific about the story of Marvel Studios' upcoming Black Widow prequel. Disney has now released a new official movie synopsis, which unveils a few new interesting details about the plot of the film.

REPORT

This synopsis for Marvel Studios' Black Widow was officially released by Disney :

"In Marvel Studios' action-packed spy thriller "Black Widow," Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, "Black Widow"—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—hits U.S. theaters on May 1, 2020." --Marvel Studios."

WHAT THIS MEANS

The "darker parts" of Romanoff's ledger are likely in reference to Drakov's daughter, São Paulo, and the hospital fire. These were some of the events that took place during Natasha's past missions, previously mentioned by Tom Hiddleston's Loki in The Avengers . Marvel Studios has already proven that they're more than capable of successfully de-aging an actor.

One can't help but wonder if the studio will use VFX technology on Scarlett Johansson to explore the "darker parts" of Romanoff's history. This could allow Marvel Studios to showcase flashbacks of Natasha's past spy missions, which would directly show audiences the events that were the cause of her years of torment.

It has already been established that the unknown force that is pursuing Natasha is the Taskmaster, but the "dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past" is likely related to the Red Room. Avengers: Age of Ultron revealed how Romanoff was raised in the Red Room.

Natasha was brainwashed into becoming one of the Soviet Union's deadliest assassins in the Red Room. The trailer has also shown glimpses of this location, which could mean that the film will uncover more secrets about the Black Widow Program.

The broken relationships that Natasha has left in her wake are probably referring to that of her former Russain family, but no one more so than Yelena. Belova sees Romanoff as a surrogate sister, and if the fight that we see in the teaser is any indication, Yelena clearly still has very strong feelings about Natasha's sudden defection from Russia to S.H.I.E.L.D
