The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to introduce a new wave of shows on Disney+ in 2022, and one of them is Ms. Marvel. The upcoming Disney+ series will showcase the debut of Iman Vellani as the titular Marvel hero, and it is directed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon.
Ms. Marvel follows the story of Kamala Khan, a teenager who idolizes Captain Marvel and then later receives superpowers to become a hero. The show's official synopsis described Khan as “a great student, avid gamer, and voracious fan-fic scribe," seemingly suggesting that the MCU version is not just a fan of Carol Danvers but the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes as well.
Ms. Marvel features a stellar Pakistani cast, considering that its lead hero is a Pakistani-American. Vellani is joined by the likes of Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Yasmeen Fletcher, Farhan Akhtar, Rish Shah, and Zenobia Shroff.
Now, it looks like another famous Pakistani actress has joined the cast of the highly-anticipated Disney+ series.
Ms. Marvel Show Cast Adds More Pakistani
The Express Tribune shared that Mehwish Hayat had joined the cast of Ms. Marvel in an unknown role. The Pakistani film and television actress is best known for her roles in Actor in Law (2016), Punjab Nahi Jaungi (2017), and Chhalawa (2019).
The outlet mentioned that it reached out to Hayat for comment and is currently awaiting her response about the casting.
Mehwish Hayat's MCU Role (Theory)
This latest report about Ms. Marvel is a promising sign since it signifies that Marvel Studios is pushing for more representation in the series.
It's worth noting that Mehwish Hayat is a notable Pakistani actress because of her involvement in Pakistan's highest-grossing blockbusters. Given that Hayat's star power is undeniable, it's reasonable to assume that she has a substantial role in Ms. Marvel.
Hayat may be playing one of Kamala Khan's teachers in high school, potentially serving as her de facto mentor in her personal life. There's also a chance that Hayat could portray one of the members of the rumored villains of the show known as ClanDestine, a family of super-beings that are decedents of Djinn, a race of powerful magicians from Marvel Comics.
It is also likely that she could play one of Kamala's family members, thus allowing her to return in future projects such as The Marvels or the potential second season of Ms. Marvel.
The latest tidbit about Ms. Marvel is the reported reshoots of the series. It is unknown if Hayat was added during the reshoots or whether she was already part of the cast during the first phase of production.
All in all, Hayat is set to bolster an already stacked ensemble, and it will be interesting to see how she fits in Ms. Marvel's mysterious narrative.
Ms. Marvel is expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
