Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn Uses Facebook Outage to Tease Secret Easter Egg

James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy, Facebook

It's a rare thing for a film's director to be as famous as its cast and as synonymous with its material as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn .

In the years following 2014's GOTG, Gunn has brought his unique brand of humor and heart to not only Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but also DC's The Suicide Squad , all while actively sharing and engaging with his ever-growing fan base on social media .

A perennial topic between Gunn and his Marvel fans relates to a legendary Guardians of the Galaxy Easter egg the director claims has only been partially discovered in the years following the film's 2014 release.

Now, on a day marked by an extensive Facebook outage, Gunn took to Twitter to revisit the subject and have a little fun with his Easter egg hunting fans.

James Gunn Jokes About Guardians Easter Egg

In reference to the seven-year hunt for Gunn's Guardians Easter egg, and possibly the other he hid in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , Gunn tweeted that he'd finally revealed the secret "on Facebook for everyone to see:"

"I just posted the big Guardians Easter egg on Facebook for everyone to see."

However, he shared this tweet during a lengthy Facebook outage that had been dominating the online conversation for hours, meaning Gunn was poking fun at his fans and the continued search.

Guardians star Dave Bautista got in on the Twitter joke commenting with a row of laughing emojis, as did Mantis' Pom Klementieff who responded to the fun with a tweet that read, "Haha."

Gunn's Neverending Guardians Easter Egg Hunt?

While Gunn's signature storytelling coupled with his bold, colorful style is distinctive and rare, his relevancy and willingness to interact with fans is even more so and something film fans would love to see from other filmmakers.

Still, the fact remains that the director's original Guardians of the Galaxy Easter egg has yet to be fully discovered, and the same goes for the Easter egg he concealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 .

Now that Gunn has completed the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , the director is likely to hide another in the threequel and possibly a bonus in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special .

Unless the fans rise to the challenge, the director could wrap up his Guardians franchise with an undefeated record when it comes to successfully hiding secrets and references from the fans.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to debut on May 5, 2023.
