Over a year after release, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers continues to see updates with new heroes, cosmetics, and more free content.
Recently, the popular co-op title released the War for Wakanda expansion with the Black Panther hero, a playable region, and a whole new storyline. The T'Challa-centric operation was the third to release post-launch after the addition of both Kate Bishop and Clint Barton's Hawkeyes.
While the studio has promised more content will continue releasing into Avengers, it's unclear which heroes are on the table for future updates. However, prior to launch, it was revealed that Spider-Man will come as a PlayStation exclusive hero.
The exclusive expansion remains shrouded in mystery with little known about this world's Spider-Man, but the update is expected to release during the fall or winter seasons. With fall just getting started, one developer recently revealed some details of what fans can expect.
Avengers Developer Offers Details on Spider-Man Update
In a recent Q&A on the Marvel's Avengers Discord server, senior producer Dan Matlack promised there will be a story to accompany the PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man hero.
Matlack revealed the Spider-Man update will be an “event,” meaning the addition will include “cutscenes and a story” when it arrives later this year:
“Spider-Man is what we call an 'event' so he will have cutscenes and a story for sure.”
What will Avengers' Spider-Man Update Include?
PlayStation players will be delighted to hear the upcoming Spider-Man expansion will include a full storyline to establish his character. But with the Spider-Man event slated to be such a significant update, it's unfortunate that Xbox, PC, and Stadia players will miss out on the web-slinging action.
In the past, Square Enix has used the term "Operations" to describe new hero additions as they include brand-new story campaigns. With the Spider-Man update only receiving "Event" status, fans should only expect a few cutscenes to flesh out Peter Parker's character instead of a full campaign.
With War for Wakanda only having released a month ago, it may be some time before Spider-Man joins the Avengers in-game. Square Enix has yet to say much about the Spider-Man event and the release is likely to be preceded by an expansive marketing campaign. Perhaps the December release of No Way Home may provide the opportune time to release Spider-Man for Avengers.
Marvel's Avengers is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Google Stadia.
