The Spider-Man Sony/MCU problem is fairly well known. Back before 2016's Captain America: Civil War, the two studios struck a bargain to allow everyone's favorite wallcrawler to enter the MCU. The twist was that, despite the partnership, Sony still had exclusive rights to Peter Parker and all his friends and enemies.
That agreement is still alive and kicking, even with the big road bump a few years ago. While Marvel does what it wants with Spider-Man, Sony is hard at work with its own universe: a universe founded on films such as Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Mobius.
The next character in line to join the strange world, which is officially known as the Sony Marvel Cinematic Universe, is Kraven The Hunter. Kraven is a character who was only just recently cast despite fans' hopes that he would show up in the MCU.
Now, fans have some more news, as it looks like another Kraven-related character is joining the fray.
CALYPSO JOINS THE HUNTER
According to The Iluminerdi, alongside the already announced characters of Kraven and The Cameleon, Calypso will be joining Kraven the Hunter's cast of eccentric characters.
It's rumored that the studio has been eyeing Jodie Turner-Smith for the role, an actress known for projects such as Queen & Slim, Star, Last Ship, and more recently, Amazon Studios' Without Remorse.
KRAVEN AND CALYPSO TOGETHER AT LAST
Calypso is an integral part of Kraven's origin story. She is an occasional lover and partner to him, and both are not big fans of Spider-Man. Calypso is a psychopathic Voodoo Priestess who utilizes magic potions in her arsenal and loves to drive Kraven into fits of rage for fun.
Whether fans want it or not, Kraven's solo film is happening. Venom wasn't all much of a hit, and if Sony wants to keep its universe alive, it's going to need a hit. There's a real possibility that if Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mobius don't do well, there could be some serious pivots in Sony's overall plans.
However, with all the multiverse elements at play currently in the MCU, anything is possible—universes could indeed collide. If all of those rumors about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No way Home are true, then it would be spectacular if Sony used that opportunity to bring one of them back into the fold.
Kraven the Hunter will reportedly release on January 13, 2023.
