Eternals has been thrust upon the world and for the most part, people are eating it up. The Chloe Zhao-directed Marvel epic was met with a lackluster critical response, causing some to wonder how it would do at the box office.
Well, as it turns out, despite the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in MCU history, Marvel Studios' 26th theatrical venture did fairly well on the box office front. The ticket stub success has led fans to wonder what the viability of more in the world of Eternals could look like.
Chloe Zhao has teased that she would love to come back for a sequel, and one of the project's headlining stars Angelina Jolie even pointed toward a return for the cast at the movie's premiere.
It seems everyone involved in the film has an interest in revisiting these characters in the future, including the crew who put pen to paper on the project.
Eternals Perfect for Disney+
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eternals writers Ryan and Kaz Firpo teased that they would love to be a part of an "Eternals prequel show on Disney+." The two said their new Marvel blockbuster is the "gift that keeps on giving," teasing that they had toyed around with potential concepts for streaming series episodes focused on the titular Eternals.
One concept featured "Kingo...juggling his life as a movie star...in 1890s Mumbai" while dealing with the heated political climate of India at the time:
"We’ve even said jokingly that there should be an Eternals prequel show on Disney+. Go back and do a Kingo episode in 1890s Mumbai where he is juggling his life as a movie star, dealing with Gandhi’s peaceful dissolution of the British empire in India."
The writers demonstrated their excitement of the spin-off potential that Eternals presents, mentioning that there "are a lot of opportunities. If the audiences [allows them]:"
"And there’s an episode with Thena where she’s in Greece. I would love to make that show. There are a lot of opportunities. If the audiences allow us, there’s going to be a story to tell with Dane Whitman. There’s going to be a story to tell in the Cosmos with the Eternals confronting Arishem and all the Celestials who are these incredible metaphors for creation. I think there’s a lot of stories in the Eternals universe."
The Perfect Pitch
If Disney were smart, they would green light this Eternals prequel pitch right now. Despite being just a set of hypotheticals coming from Ryan and Kaz Firpo here, this sounds like it could be the perfect place to further explore these characters.
Going forward, audiences will surely be treated to a continuation of this story. Whether it's following Dane Whitman on his journey to Black Knighthood or exploring the cosmos alongside Druig, Makari, and Thena, fans are going to get more of these characters.
But why not go back and dive into the history of this band of Eternal protectors?
Some would say that Eternals maybe would have benefited from being presented as a Disney+ series in the first place. The movie had the tall task of tackling nearly 7000 years of lore and, depending on who is asked, did it to middling results. This story seems perfect for something longer form on the House of Mouse's streaming service, so it would not be all that surprising if a pitch such as this came to fruition.
For those looking for more of this cast of characters, Eternals is in theaters worldwide now.
