While it’s still over a year away, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains one of the most anticipated Marvel Studios films. It was originally supposed to release years ago, but due to director James Gunn’s brief Disney exile and the worldwide current pandemic, it won't be seen until 2023.

There’s been lots of speculation as to what fans will be able to expect. For one, rumors heavily suggest the villain will be the High Evolutionary, played by Peacemaker’s Chukwudi Iwuji.

One big mystery that the story will have to explore is the subject of Gamora. The last time audiences saw the character, the original version of her had been killed on Vormir, with a Variant sticking around on Earth after the defeat of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

But what will her role in the upcoming film be? Well, while there’s still no answer to that question, Zoe Saldana has spoken out about what part of the character she’d like to see more of.

Zoe Saldana Wants More Young Gamora

In an interview with Jake’s Takes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. star Zoe Saldana was asked which past character of hers she would want to look at more so, particularly regarding that character's childhood, to get a better understanding of their past.

Saldana was quick to say Gamora. Even though there was a brief bit of her early years in Avengers: Infinity War, the actress noted how that brief taste made her “incredibly curious to know what that planet [and her species] was like:”

“Yeah, and I feel like that taster made me incredibly curious to know what that planet was like, what her species was like... because they were completely wiped out of existence and… because she carries such a such a big weight on, you know, on herself and… to get to know why and where that comes from was really great.”

Gamora's Past on the MCU Big Screen

It is a shame that the MCU has only explored tiny bits and pieces of Gamora’s past. Maybe her upcoming time in Vol. 3 will give some more screentime to those events—possibly even including some clearly different events, given this new version of the character audiences will be following is from a different timeline.

Exploring Gamora’s childhood and early years would also be a fantastic way to get more of Josh Brolin’s Thanos. It would make the wait until Eternals 2, where he is more than likely to show his face in some respect, much easier.

Since this Variant will be coming into the picture in the last story of a trilogy, the script is going to have to do a lot of character building and fast. There probably won’t be much time to build her up from scratch, with everything that film has to service.
