After almost a decade of ongoing success, Grand Theft Auto 5 remains among the most played and watched games to this day. Given the record-breaking popularity of the outrageous action-adventure title, anticipation for the sequel is at an all-time high as gamers have been calling for Grand Theft Auto 6 to be announced for years now.
Grand Theft Auto 5 was first released on Xbox 360 and PS3 back in 2013 and has since received multiple generational upgrades to bring it to Xbox One, PS4, and PC, with the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 launch set for March 2022.
The popular publisher recently released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition featuring upgraded versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The collection arrived to great controversy as it came packed with bugs, crashes, and game-breaking issues.
As the developer continues to update GTA Online to this day amid calls for Grand Theft Auto 6's announcement, Rockstar Games has finally offered the first official update on the sequel's progress.
Rockstar Offers First GTA 6 Update
Rockstar Games confirmed in a recent blog post development on Grand Theft Auto 6 is "well underway" and that more details will be revealed "as soon as [they] are ready".
The full comment from Rockstar can be read below:
"We are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details."
Following Rockstar Games' post, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad shared his belief on Twitter the Grand Theft Auto developer is looking to hire new developers to work on the highly-anticipated sequel.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reporter and popular insider Jason Schreier revealed his expectation that Grand Theft Auto 6 may be announced later in 2022 for a fall 2023 release that would ultimately slip into 2024 after delays.
When Will Grand Theft Auto 6 Release?
Grand Theft Auto 5 was initially announced in October 2011 before going on to release in September 2013. Assuming the roughly two-year gap between reveal and release is mirrored with the sixth installment, fans should prepare to wait until 2024 to get their hands on Grand Theft Auto 6, that is if a full announcement comes by the end of 2022.
As of now, Rockstar is continuing to develop and release content for its fifth title which is set to release enhanced editions on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022. With the next-gen upgrade only just releasing next month, the studio will likely continue support for its current Grand Theft Auto title for some time to come.
Rumors currently indicate Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a female protagonist and continue to take place in the modern-day with the franchise set to return to Vice City. Just like other current titles, the map will reportedly evolve over its long life cycle.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has yet to set a release date, but it is expected to release for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 with the potential for a PC edition.
