Grand Theft Auto as a franchise has become the golden goose of the gaming industry. GTA V continues to appear on sales charts with over 140 million copies of the game sold since its launch in 2013.
And, since it has been nearly eight years since V's initial launch and a whole console generation as well, fans are looking for what comes next from Rockstar's open-world crime series. Whispers of Grand Theft Auto VI have been permeating the conversation for months now, and a possible reveal coming this year seems more real than ever.
Well, according to a new leak, details for the new game could be close on the horizon.
GTA ENTERS THE CRYPTO GAME
According to a recent Tweet from gaming insider Tom Henderson, Grand Theft Auto VI could reward players with in-game cryptocurrency instead of virtual cash.
He wrote that "some missions will reward [players] in bitcoin instead of cash:"
"I heard recently that in GTA 6, some missions will reward [players] in bitcoin instead of cash for completing some missions. The stock market feature will return, with the addition of a broker for different cryptocurrencies. If GTA 6 incorporates this right, it's huge for crypto."
KEEPER OF THE CRYPT-O
While this is only just a rumor, it may actually hold some weight. Hints towards Rockstar's next Grand Theft Auto have slowly started to drip out over the past year or so, and everything so far seems like it could hold some water.
If GTA VI were to incorporate crypto into its gameplay, it would make a lot of sense. GTA has for years emulated and taken notes from the current world, acting as somewhat of a commentary of the time and place it releases. With cryptocurrency being all the rage right now, it would for sure at least have to be mentioned in a new Grand Theft Auto.
However, for the piece of the fanbase hoping this next game would take players back to the neon-painted skyline of 1980s Vice City, this rumor could prove disappointing. If GTA is going to hop back to the '80s, then any mention of crypto would have in-game characters looking at the protagonist like Marty McFly at an Under The Sea dance.
While GTA VI still has yet to be confirmed, gamers can purchase Grand Theft Auto V again when it releases on next-gen consoles later this year.
