It’s been a rollercoaster of a month for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog. Renowned voice actor Robert Craig Smith announced his departure from voicing the character he’d brought to life for 10 years.

Despite that sad news, a new Sonic animated show was announced by Netflix for a 2022 release.

It looks like next year will be a banner year for the famous speedster thanks to some live-action Sonic news today.

SONIC SPEEDING BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN

In an announcement trailer today, Paramount Pictures revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will release in theaters on April 8, 2022.

The trailer’s description reads:

Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious. Presenting the official title of the #SonicMovie sequel: Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Catch #SonicMovie2 in theatres in 2022.

A CONTINUATION OF THE BELOVED FILM FRANCHISE

The sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog is set to continue the story set up by its predecessor. While the 2020 film received mostly positive reviews from critics, it was undoubtedly loved by fans. The film’s audience score sits at a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes , and many cite it as one of the best films based on a video game property.

It looks like 2022 is going to be a huge year for the beloved video game mascot. The film will possibly follow its predecessor as a box-office hit, and Netflix’s animated Sonic series will likely provide some binge-worthy content for fans of the character.

As of now, it’s unclear whether the film will also release on Paramount Plus, the rebranded CBS All Access. Warner Bros. films will release in theaters and on HBO Max in 2021, and it’s possible that the trend will continue into 2022 depending on the state of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paramount may follow a similar approach with its own streaming service, allowing fans to see Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the comfort of their own homes.
