Kena: Bridge of Spirits was revealed in September of last year with a breathtaking announcement trailer. The visuals shown during the Future of Gaming event blew spectators away, with many comparing its art style to that used by Disney in their animated feature films. Players will take control of Kena as they attempt to guide lost souls to their resting place by utilizing their charming spirit companions named the Rot.
PlayStation announced that a brand-new State of Play event would take place, with a number of updates and reveals promised throughout the 30-minute showcase. Fans were not disappointed, as we saw an updated look at the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, as well as a reveal for SIFU, a mixed-martial-arts game developed by Sloclap, the developers of Absolver.
Towards the end of the event, however, a new batch of gameplay was revealed for one of PlayStation's most anticipated releases.
NEW TRAILERS AND SCREENSHOTS FOR KENA
During the PlayStation State of Play event, new gameplay and screenshots were revealed for the upcoming title Kena: Bridge of Spirits, developed and published by Ember Labs.
Check out the brand-new trailer below.
A number of screenshots were also posted on Twitter by IGN, showcasing more of Kena's stunning visual style.
The second screenshot shows Kena with an army of her trusted 'Rot' squad.
Next, the character appears to be looking to traverse a dangerous path, with the environment changing as Kena finds a way to cross.
In the last screenshot, the main title character is seen covering her face with a mask that seemingly resembles an animal of some kind.
NEXT-GENERATION VISUALS ARE STARTING TO SHINE
While a number of things stick out from the new gameplay trailer for Kena: Bridge of Spirits, it's hard to dispute that the developers have aimed for a visually stunning title as a focus in their approach.
The release of the PlayStation 5 promised huge steps for the console player, from quicker loading times to increased storage capabilities, but the one thing that stuck out to most was the graphical capabilities.
PC players have long boasted about the huge advantage they have with an Xbox or PlayStation in terms of resolution and frame-rate, but the next-generation consoles set out to compete. We've seen titles such as Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and an upgrade to 2018's God Of War utilize these improvements, but Kena looks to take this one step further.
That isn't the only draw of the title, however, with developer Ember Lab promising an “interesting and thought-provoking” main storyline. The title looks to explore all aspects of Kena's life, from her tragic backstory involving her father, all the way to her current quest to help the deceased understand their difficulties. Players will be entertained by this upcoming exclusive, adding to PlayStation's growing list of stellar titles only available on their consoles.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is set to release on August 24, 2021, and it will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 from release.
