It has been nearly three years since the release of God of War on PlayStation 4. The soft reboot of the series came with critical acclaim, becoming one of the PlayStation's best-selling PS4 games and the highest selling in the series.
A sequel to Sony Santa Monica's latest mythological adventure has been teased to be coming in 2021 with the working title of God of War: Ragnarök. While not much is known of the Kratos' upcoming adventure, the PS5 (and possibly PS4) title could be just one of a couple irons in the fire over at Santa Monica Studio.
NEW GAME FROM SANTA MONICA STUDIO
A new job listing on the website of Sony's Santa Monica Studio hints at an unannounced game besides the upcoming God of War: Ragnarök. The position is for an Art Director for a "large scale project" which has yet to be revealed to the world.
The listing notes that the work will involve "characters and creatures" in a 3D environment.
WHAT THIS MEANS
This is very exciting news for PlayStation gamers. The team over at Sony Santa Monica has proven that they are a top tier talent in the industry, and the more gamers get out of them the better.
Now, it's still up in the air as to what this game actually is. One can only take so much from the vague details given in the job posting; however there are some hints out there. Before Santa Monica put out God of War in 2018, the team was working on an open world sci-fi game with Battlestar Galactica writer Michael Angeli. Could this be the return of that project?
It is unknown if God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog is working on the upcoming sequel; so this could be his new game, with Barlog simply taking an overseer role on Ragnarök. In that, Barlog gets the chance to consult on the main story beats of Kratos and Atreus' journey while also getting to dive into something completely new.
Whatever this second team is doing over at Santa Monica Studio, it is still eons away. If they are just now hiring for an Art Director then this project is still in its infancy. It will be years before fans hear anything substantial on this one.
God of War: Ragnarök is scheduled for some time in 2021.
