Hitman's Agent 47 stands in the dark

Hitman 3 is set to release on January 20, 2021 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store.

The game was revealed at the PlayStation 5 event in June, and a trailer announcing VR support for the game was featured in one of PlayStation’s State of Play events.

Recently, IO Interactive, Hitman ’s developer and publisher, announced that it is working on a 007 game . Though attention was momentarily diverted to that project, all eyes are still on the upcoming Hitman 3 .

IO Interactive, the developer and publisher of the Hitman series, released a new gameplay trailer for Hitman 3 on its YouTube channel.

Titled “Introducing Hitman 3 ,” the video shows off Agent 47’s skills as he navigates different locales to find and execute his targets in creative ways. A narrator describes the weapons and choices available to Agent 47 throughout the trailer.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog , IO Interactive Communications Manager Travis Barbour confirmed that PlayStation 4 owners of the game can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version at no additional cost:

“On the PlayStation 5, Hitman 3 will support 4K visuals, 60 fps, HDR support, and faster load times. Plus, our free next-gen upgrade program allows PS4 owners (disc or digital) to upgrade to the PS5 version of the game at no additional charge. Of course, if you choose to buy the PS4 version on disc, you need to make sure to have a PS5 with a disc drive to take advantage of the offer.”

Barbour also discussed how the PlayStation 5's DualSense controller is supported in Hitman 3 . He specifically focused on the DualSense’s adaptive triggers:

“One specific (and really cool!) example of our adaptive trigger support is how you activate the Focus effect that slows down the world around you with a sniper rifle. When you gently squeeze the R2 button, your finger will reach a tension point that will resist your pressure, and you’ll need to hold your finger against that tension point to activate the focus. When you’re ready to fire, push past that tension point and you’ll feel the “click” of the trigger as you fire the weapon. Boom. Headshot.”

Barbour also discussed VR support for the game, saying that owners of previous Hitman games will be able to play through those levels in VR via Hitman 3 .

WHAT THIS MEANS

This trailer shows off what players can expect to experience in Hitman 3 . Much of the core gameplay loop from previous Hitman titles is noticeable in this trailer. However, new locations, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, are on display.

What’s especially interesting about Hitman 3 is its implementation of VR. Though it wasn’t shown off or even discussed in this trailer, VR will likely add a whole new level of depth to an already engrossing series. Methodically planning attacks or stealthing through locations will probably be even more immersive through VR.

It’s hard not to think how this game’s features will be translated into the 007 game that was recently confirmed by IO Interactive . After all, both franchises tell the tale of stealthy professionals tasked with neutralizing assigned targets. Owners of Hitman 3 might get a taste of what’s to come for IO Interactive’s future project.
